Paul M. O’Brien,74, passed away peacefully at home on October 29, 2016, after a period of declining health. He was predeceased by his wife, Susan O’Brien with whom he shared 45 years of marriage. Born in Danvers, MA on April 22, 1942, he was the son of Ruth (Reynolds) and James O’Brien. He was raised and educated in Danvers and graduated from St. John’s Preparatory School and Merrimack College. Paul served in the United States Navy as an officer and taught at Great Lakes Naval Base. He pursued further degrees at Salem State College and taught for the Beverly, MA School System as a mathematics teacher for more than 30 years. He was a dedicated husband, father, and teacher. Paul enjoyed traveling with his wife, history of all types, and tennis. He treasured quiet times with his family. Paul is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Christine and Joseph Mercurio of Nashua, NH, and Erin and Robert Woitkowski of Haverhill, MA and five beloved grandchildren, Jonathan, Kelsey and Kersten Mercurio and Stephen and David Woitkowski, his sister Marie McLaughlin of Danvers and brother, James O’Brien of Florida. He was also predeceased by his sister Joanne Holzmann. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 9AM in St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, 24 Conant St., Danvers. Burial is private. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 4-7PM at C.R. Lyons & Sons Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Paul’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.

  1. I’m sorry to hear of Mr. O’Brien’s passing. He was my homeroom teacher, and such a nice man. May he rest in peace.

  2. Paul was my roommate at Navy BOQ and best friend there. We were in each other’s wedding and both made partner choices above our station. May Paul, Sue and my late wife Kathy all be waiting for me to join their happy hour !
