Lucy May Taylor Yntema, 95, passed away quietly on October 22, 2018, in Danvers, MA. Lucy May Taylor was born on June 21, 1923 in Snow Hill, N.C., to Richard and Christine Taylor. She was the valedictorian of her high school and part of a select choir which travelled to the White House to sing for Eleanor Roosevelt in 1940. Lucy graduated from the Women's College of Greensboro (UNCG) in 1944, with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics. She taught high school math for a few years and then took a job as a Computer at NACA in Newport News, VA (as in the film, Hidden Figures). There, she met the love of her life, Bob Yntema, an Aeronautical Engineer. He proposed to her on Halloween and they married New Year's Day, January 1, 1949. Bob and Lucy literally built their first home in Newport News, VA, moved their growing family to Newtown Square, PA, and finally settling in Hamilton, MA. After retirement, they spent many winters in Bartow, FL. They were married for 68 years, before Bob passed away last year. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Hamilton. She loved music, flowers (especially roses), golfing, and traveling to visit her family and friends. She was a loving and generous person with a caring and warm spirit towards all people. Lucy is survived by her children, John and his wife, Katharine, of Decatur, GA, Ted and his wife, Susan, of Cooper City, FL, Jeanne Maurand of Hamilton, Chris Van Dyke and her husband, Myke, of Alexandria, VA and Susan Sawyer and her husband, Tom, of Kingston N.H.; 12 grandchildren, Lauren, TJ, Andrew, Matthew, Kim, Nathan, Jordan, Rosemarie, Kyle, Richard and Hannah and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Yntema, her brother, Richard Taylor, and her granddaughter, Emily Maurand. Her Funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, October 26, 2018 in the First United Methodist Church of Hamilton 391 Bay Road, Hamilton. Burial will follow in Hamilton Cemetery, Hamilton. Family will receive visitors on Thursday, October 25, 2018 from 4 to 8 p.m. at C. R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers.
