John W. Mroszczyk

February 2, 1955 ~ July 30, 2019
John W. Mroszczyk, 64, died early Tuesday morning, July 30, 2019 at his home in Danvers due to cancer. He was surrounded by his loving and devoted family. He was the husband of Jean M. (Gronberg) Mroszczyk, with whom he shared 40 years of marriage.
Born in Ipswich on Feb. 2, 1955, he was the son of the late Walter and Angela (Farese) Mroszczyk. He was raised in Ipswich and was a 1973 graduate of Ipswich High School. Thanks to an academic scholarship, he was able to pursue a bachelor’s degree in engineering at Boston University. He graduated summa cum laude and went on to earn both master’s and doctoral degrees from M.I.T.
John was an accomplished, well-respected engineer who earned a number of awards throughout his career for his work in safety engineering. He owned and operated Northeast Consulting Engineers, Inc. and provided design, safety, and consulting services. He was a leading national advocate for workplace and consumer safety, and was actively involved at the national level with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).
Active in the local community, he served for many years as a member of the Danvers Finance Committee and as a Water & Sewer Commissioner. Over his life he volunteered as a coach with Danvers American Little League, as a religious education instructor, and was a past president of the Danvers High School Football Boosters. He was also a member of the Danvers Fish & Game and the Polish Club.
John was a family man. He enjoyed vacations with his family around New England, particularly visiting Loon Mountain. He loved the North Shore, riding his motorcycle, working on projects around the house, and going to concerts. John loved American history and was also an active member of the Danvers Alarm List and the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment.
In addition to his wife, he leaves three children, Lisa Mroszczyk Murphy and her husband Thomas Murphy of Hagerstown, Maryland, Joseph Mroszczyk and his wife Ashley of Amesbury, and Keri Mroszczyk and her fiancé Thomas Goris of East Kingston, NH, three grandchildren, Thomas, Owen, and Jack Murphy, as well as a loving extended family of cousins and dear friends.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on August 5 at 10:30 in Saint Rose of Lima Church, Park Street, Topsfield. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers. Relatives, friends, and colleagues are invited. Visiting hours are on August 4 from 4:00-7:00 in C.R. Lyons & Sons Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established to support undergraduate education in engineering. Donations can be made to the John Mroszczyk Memorial Fund, c/o North Shore Bank, 48 Elm Street, Danvers, MA 01923.
I became acquainted with John in his roles as a Finance Committee member and Water & Sewer Commissioner. I always found him to be a man of unparalleled commitment to his volunteer work. His was a quiet, thoughtful presence at budget hearings, where he could ask thought-provoking questions and express his opinions respectfully. I was sad to learn of his passing. I hope his family will draw comfort from knowing how well respected he was and how very much he will be missed, not only because of his community involvement but because of the kind of man he was.
John’s generous service to the town will not be forgotten. A faithful servant and colleague.
One of the finest, kindest, selfless gentleman I have ever met. Always willing to help whenever needed. Terrific youth coach that did so much behind the scenes for the Danvers American Little League and Danvers Babe Ruth.
My condolences to Jean, Lisa, Joe, and Keri. It was a pleasure to know John. He was truly a special person.

I knew Dr. Mroszczyk very well through his work with the American Society of Safety Engineers/Professionals. Dr. Mroszczyk dedicated countless hours to committees, taskgroups, and standards development efforts that led to safer and healthier workplaces for workers. He led committees, divisions, and groups in his unassuming yet confident manner. The man held a Doctorate from M.I.T., yet he was always open to learning about new ideas and concepts. His knowledge and expertise of electrical safety issues was literally incredible, and I never saw his equal on cutting edge electrical safety issues. He was, and through his work still is, a thought leader to move occupational safety and health forward. As a leader of the ASSE/ASSP Engineering Practice Specialty with almost 2,000 members, he moved technical safety issues forward on a global and national level. I sat through many a meeting and event with him and think the world of him and his dedication to people and safety. The one thing I have to chuckle about. In every meeting I was ever in with him, and there were many, he always had to spell his last name over-and-over again for the person taking the notes…!!! I would always laugh because he would not lose his patience. He just kept spelling his last name out loud numerous times. Dr. John will be missed but not forgotten. So many great memories of John. Primarily the many years he volunteered as a coach and administrator with the Danvers American and Babe Ruth Leagues. Tireless worker who always found the time to help, no matter what you asked of him. There are very few people with the character of John. Helping with tryouts, umpires, schedules and the many hours building the snack bar at Twi Field. The players, coaches, and Town of Danvers were extremely fortunate and blessed to have John Mroszczyk for the many but far to few years.
I am so sad to hear of John’s passing – I will miss his voice on our calls.
I got to know John through his leadership and stewardship of the Z490.2 committee. John was a great leader! He always spoke in kindness and calmness, gently nudging us along. He will leave a large gap on our team – he will be missed.
I wish all of his family and friends my heartfelt thoughts on the difference that John made in the lives of others. I hope that your loving memories live on and bring you years of comfort.
Had the honor and privilege of serving with John as a fellow New Englander committee member at ASSP. Always a gentleman, and with his wealth of knowledge always brought extra credibility to any industry initiative. He will be missed but not forgotten. My thoughts, prayers and condolences to John’s family, friends and colleagues.
It is with a very sad heart I write this in remembrance of John. I worked with John on various councils and committees over the years at the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) and always found him to be extremely knowledgeable, approachable, and most of all, just a really good person and friend. Our profession has lost a wonderfully intelligent individual. My deepest condolence to John’s family. May the Lord Jesus Christ grant you a peace that only He can provide.
John’s contributions to the profession are invaluable. It was my privilege and honor to serve with John, crafting standards that influence occupational safety and health practice. An exemplary professional ASSP member and volunteer. John will be missed, but his work will live on indefinitely in the body of OSH professional knowledge. Peace be with John, as he has journeyed home.
Dear Jean and family,
I am so sorry for the loss of your husband John. I only knew him through knowing
you, and your Mom & Dad,Irene and Marshall.
I remember the few times I did speak with him how impressed I was with his gentle
and kind spirit. May he rest in peace and may the following quote from Helen Keller
bring you and your family comfort.
“What we once enjoyed and deeply loved, we can never lose, for all that we
love deeply becomes a part of us.”
Love & Prayers,

Although I did not know John Mroszczyk, after reading all the tributes and obituary, I am sure I would have liked and respected the gentleman. He passed too early in life and I am sure he will be missed. On behalf of the Goris family and my son Thomas, I would like to extend our condolences and prayers to the Mroszczyk family.
I was very fortunate to share some time working on a society committee with John. A true gem – extremely competent, very humble, always ready to help in any way he could. A wonderful example of an impactful life well lived.
Jean, my husband and I are glad we are here in MA and to have finally met you and your family. We mourn your loss and we will be here to support you if and when it is needed. Our heartfelt condolences to all family and friends who had the pleasure of having John in their lives. Like you said to me yesterday, you wish we had met him as we would have had so much in common. ♥️Bonnie & Dick Nesdall
