Muriel E. Nelson, 91, died Thursday, December 26, 2019 at St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital in Savannah, GA, where she had been residing in recent months. She was the loving wife of the late Carl I. “Skip” Nelson, Jr., with whom she shared sixty-eight years of marriage. Born in Somerville on May 26, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Sarah (Beamish) Leonard. She was raised and educated in Winthrop and was a 1946 graduate of Winthrop High School. She and her late husband were residents of Winthrop for many years until moving to Hamilton, where they resided for forty-eight years. For many years, she was employed in the housekeeping department at Beverly Hospital and had been a member of the First Methodist Church in Winthrop. She leaves her children, Beverly Yacovitch of Danvers, Carla Nelson of Savannah, GA, and Daniel Nelson and his wife Susan Payne of Fayette, ME, her grandchildren, Charity Collier, Edward Nelson, Sara Nelson, Travis Yacovitch, Eric Nelson, and Ruby Nelson, four great-grandchildren, Anthony, Jacob, Ryan, and Jasper, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Edward Nelson, and her siblings Ruth Smith, Edna Doyle, and Ernest Leonard. Her funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Muriel’s memory may be made to the Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Ave., Salem, MA 01970. Arrangements are by C.R.
