Henriette Shuman

henriette shuman
Henriette Shuman, better known as Jetty to her friends and Oma to her grandchildren, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at the age of 83. Jetty was born on June 18, 1937 and took huge pleasure in celebrating her birthdays with her husband Bert, her children and their MTS friends at Chi Chi's Mexican restaurant in Framingham, MA where she got to wear their fancy Mexican sombreros. Jetty was born to Dutch parents in Indonesia where she spent her youngest years on a plantation managed by her father. After the war, her family moved to Holland where she spent treasured time with her best friend Marianne Perkins. She met her husband of nearly 60 years when she was visiting family friends in Washington D.C. where Bert was stationed with the Navy. They brought up their two children in Lexington, MA, where they remained until Bert's death in 2015. Jetty's life was highlighted by many trips to exotic locations around the world with Bert, visits with her 2 children and 4 grandchildren, her weekly tennis matches, annual Memorial Day bicycle weekends on Martha's Vineyard, frequent gezellig family get-togethers, and 2 week vacations on Cape Cod, first in Chatham when her children were young, and then in Orleans with her grown children and their children. Her children remember her skills assembling Indonesian rijsttafels while her grandchildren remember her incredible Dutch hamburgers. In her later years, she enjoyed watching professional tennis, speaking Dutch with her Dutch friends, and sitting in gardens and natural settings listening to bird song while looking up birds in her bird books. Jetty is predeceased by her husband Bertram M. Shuman who she has missed every day since his passing in September 2015. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Anneke Wade and her husband Bill, her son Ken and his wife Jolene, and her four grown grandchildren Kevin, Corrianna, Mitchell and Emily. Jetty also leaves behind her brother-in-law Arnold Shuman and his wife Sandi, and her sister-in-law Dorothy Pickering and her husband David, along with several nieces and nephews. A gathering of family and friends will be scheduled in May in Westview Cemetary where Jetty will be buried with her husband. In lieu of flowers, a tree can be planted in the NH White Mountains in Bert & Jetty Shuman's name through alivingtribute.org

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Dear Wade and Shuman families, I’m looking at Jetty’s picture. She was so beautiful. She died way too young, but I know how unhappy she was since Bert died. I’m so glad I got to spend some time with her at our lunch in Burlington last summer as well as a number of conversations we had on the phone. There are so many memories that are in my head at this time, too many to enumerate. I just want to say that when I became a part of the MTS group in 1964 when Arthur and I married, I depended on Jetty to help me fit in. Our two families had so many wonderful times together. I’m so glad we will be all be spending Memorial Day Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard. We will celebrate Bert and Jetty. Looking forward to May and better times. Love, Ellie

  2. Dear Ken and Anneke,
We also lost a dear friend in Jettie and Bert.
We had to find out online after failed telephone calls.
Atie was bride of honor on their wedding .
The Shuman and Hubenet parents were also good friends.
    Our condolences,
    Atie Hubenet and Wil Rotmeyer
