Margaret E. Cummings (née O’Connell) passed away surrounded by family on September 1, 2025 at the age of 89. She was the wife of the late Paul M. Cummings.

Born in Boston in January 1936, she was the daughter of the late Geoffrey and Elizabeth (O’Donovon) O’Connell. Margaret was raised in Hamilton and Danvers and graduated from Saint Mary High School in Beverly, class of 1954. Margaret and Paul raised their family in Connecticut, New Hampshire and New York before her return to Danvers after Paul’s passing.

Margaret was a devout Catholic and parishioner of Saint Mary of the Annunciation and was involved in numerous church groups including being a friendly face to greet you at Saturday afternoon Mass. Margaret was very active within her community where she volunteered with many groups including the library and Senior Center. She also worked at the former Partridge Tree Gift Shop in Danvers. Margaret enjoyed quilting, sewing and knitting as well as playing mahjong weekly with her dear friends.

Margaret’s greatest joy was her family. She so enjoyed being a wife and mother and delighted in her grandchildren. She is survived by her four children, JoAnn Butterworth (late Albert) of Rochester, NH; Michael Cummings of Cambridge, MA; Mary-Margaret Kopaskie (Mark) of Pebble Beach, CA; and Kathleen Johnson (Ken) of Wellesley, MA. She also leaves six grandchildren: Elizabeth Kopaskie (Spencer Kirkwood), Luke and Peter Kopaskie, and Makenzie, Conor and Emily Johnson. Margaret was predeceased by her brothers John and Maurice O’Connell.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I had the pleasure of meeting Peg at the wedding and festivities surrounding the wedding of my son Spencer Kirkwood, to her granddaughter, Elizabeth. What a delightful and sweet lady. I can see her sincerity and kindness in her daughter, Mary, and Elizabeth. Like all passings, I wish I could have know her longer. It seems we had a lot in common that I would have loved to have explored.

  2. Peg was truly a lady…always friendly and kind, and very appreciative to those around her as well as of God’s beautiful nature.
