Born in: Boston, Massachusetts
Resided in: South Palm Beach, Florida

Richard J. “Dick” Whouley, 92, died peacefully on March 6, 2026 surrounded by his three children.

Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Richard and Margaret (Harvey) Whouley.  He was raised in South Boston and later lived in Dorchester. He was educated in the Boston public schools and graduated from the Boston Trade School. Following his service in the United States Army, Dick pursued further education at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, laying the foundation for a long and industrious career.

He began his professional life at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and later worked for Anderson-Nichols. In 1971, demonstrating the entrepreneurial drive that would define his life, he founded Scientific Management Techniques, a company specializing in mechanical aptitude testing in the basement of his Dorchester three-decker. After relocating the business to Copley Square, Dick became actively involved in several business ventures in the area. In addition to his primary work, he was also engaged in rental property ownership, residential development, and owned a coffee shop in Kenmore Square.

Dick lived for many years in Dorchester and Milton before retiring to South Palm Beach, Florida. Throughout his life, he was known for his exceptional work ethic and remarkable entrepreneurial spirit, qualities that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.  He found joy, peace, and happiness being on or near the water and especially loved to sail.

He is survived by his former wife, Mary C. Whouley of Norwood; his three children, Michael Whouley and his wife Sally of Danvers, Mary Houllahan and her husband Arthur of Winchester, and Mark Whouley and his wife Juliann of Norwood; and his cherished grandchildren, Nora, Peter, Matthew, and Patrick Whouley, and Michael and Meghan Houllahan. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Geraldine Saccone and Donna Bailey.

At Dick’s request, funeral services were private. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Arc of Massachusetts, 217 South St., Waltham, MA 02453.  Arrangements are by C.R. Lyons & Sons Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers.  To share a message of sympathy with the Whouley family, please visit www.LyonsFuneral.com.
