Mark J. McDermott, 78, died following a brief illness on Thursday, June 4, 2026 at a local nursing facility. He was the loving husband of the late Diane R. (Gould) McDermott, with whom he shared fifty-three years of marriage.
Born in Worcester on December 23, 1947, he was the son of the late Henry and Mary (Salalaiko) McDermott. He was raised and educated in Danvers and was a 1965 graduate of Danvers High School. Mark served honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, stationed aboard the USS Gearing in the Mediterranean Sea.
Prior to starting his professional career, Mark was employed by a local landscaper and was proud of his work on the Endicott Pear Tree and the courtyard at the Thorpe School.
Mark enjoyed a long career in sales at Country Gas, later Eastern Propane, where he built lasting relationships with customers and colleagues until the time of his retirement.
An active member of the Danvers community, Mark was a former town meeting member and served on the planning board. A member of the Knights of Columbus, Thomas E. Power Council #1505, he was a Past Grand Knight and Past District Deputy.
He was proud of his military service and was always eager to lend a hand with Danvers VFW Charles W. Davis Post 2359 and the Danvers Veterans’ Council. He was honored to serve as Grand Marshall of a Danvers Memorial Day Parade for his service to our country and commitment to community.
He leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Patrick McDermott and Elmida Ramirez of Danvers, two grandchildren, Hansen and Hannah Ramirez, his sister-in-law, Marsha McDermott of Danvers, and two nephews, Michael and Jeffrey McDermott. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Marlene McDermott.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 11, 2026 at 10AM in Saint Mary of the Annunciation Church, 24 Conant St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers. Relatives and friends are invited. Visitation will be Thursday morning prior to the Mass from 8:30AM to 9:30AM in C.R. Lyons & Sons Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. In lieu of flower, donations in Mark’s memory may be made to Operation Troop Support, 16 Trinity St., Danvers, MA 01923.
