Evangeline A. Toomey

It is with gratitude for a life well lived that we announce that Evangeline (Hidish) Toomey, age 96, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2026, surrounded by her family.

Born in Portland, ME on March 22, 1930, Vangie was a lifelong Danvers resident.  She enjoyed a long career in State government, retiring as Director of Personnel and Business Management for the Board of Regents of Higher Education. In her later years, she valued her volunteer work for St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish.

She will be remembered for her family and holiday gatherings, her generosity and her devotion to her family. She was deeply loved by her large and extended family and will be greatly missed.

Van was preceded in death by her husband, James, with whom she enjoyed 70 years of marriage.  She was also preceded in death by her oldest son, David, her brother Adam Kowalski, and her son-in-law James Collins.

She is survived by her 4 children and their spouses, Kathleen Collins of Byfield, Francis and Lisa Toomey of Wenham, John and Cathy Toomey of Sandown, NH, Maggie and Rich Driscoll of Danvers, as well as a daughter-in-law Cathy Hussey of Alfred, ME.  She leaves behind 10 grandchildren, Denise, Melanie and Michael, Jessica, Caitlin and Christina, Meghan and James, and Dan and Pat.  She also leaves behind 14 great-grandchildren, Molly, Oliver and Bea, Alison, Catherine and Paul, Violet and Evelyn, Lily, Max, James, Jr. and Noah, Teagan and Maisie.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 at 11AM in Saint Mary of the Annunciation Church, 24 Conant St., Danvers.  Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers.  Relatives and friends are invited.  Visitation will be prior to the Mass from 9:30AM to 10:30AM in C.R. Lyons & Sons Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers.  In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, P.O.
