Our beloved Albert F. Staunton (94) passed away on February 19, 2026 following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Barbara (O’Brien) Staunton, with whom he shared a 12 year journey, and the late Elizabeth “Betty” (Bushner) Staunton with whom he enjoyed 58 years of marriage while residing in Mountainside, New Jersey.
Born and raised in Hillside, NJ, the son of the late Robert and Edna (Hoffman) Staunton, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University. Al dedicated himself to serving his country in the United States Navy Air as a 2nd Class Petty Officer for the helicopter squadron working with aircraft materials and blueprints, welding and lithography, and was honorably discharged. He was recently invited to take part in the Honor Flight to Washington, DC in recognition of our brave veterans.
In the business world, Al excelled as an insurance agent, owning and operating a State Farm Agency in New Jersey for many years. He took great pride in earning a pilot’s license and owning a small, private plane.
Ever the Eagle Scout, Al kept a compass stashed in his car so he would never be lost and always carried a Swiss Army knife. He enjoyed tending to his Victory Garden at his NJ home and planted 1,000 trees on his 50 acre farm in PA. Many joyful times were spent on family trips to Greenwood Lake NJ, the Jersey shore, the Pennsylvania farm and Punta Gorda, FL. He also enjoyed boating, fishing and traveling around the globe on both land and sea tours.
In addition to his wife Barbara, he is survived by his son Allan Staunton of Georgia, his step daughters, Eileen Shields of Danvers, Lynne Colpoys of Florida and Jan Shields of Rockport, his sister Barbara “Bobby” Chang and her husband Billy of California, his grandchildren Jack and Jesse Staunton, Christian Colegrove, Jamie Bilfulco and her husband Andy, Daniel Colpoys, Michael Gibbon and his wife Catherine, Kelsey Gray and her husband Aaron and two great grandchildren, Althea and Oliver. He was predeceased by two sons, Christopher and Douglas Staunton and stepdaughter Kathy Shields.
His funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in Al’s name to the Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty St., Danvers, MA, 01923 or online at https://secure.qgiv.com/for/xuihvw or Honor Flight New England PO BOX 16287, Hookset, NH, 03106 or online at https://honorflightnewengland.org/donate.
