Clarence "Larry" Thornton

Dr. Clarence Edward “Larry” Thornton, formerly of Danvers and Middleton passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at the age of 91, he was the husband of Virginia (Newhall) Thornton, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.
Born in Newark, NJ on June 24, 1925, he was the son of the late Clarence and Winifred (Reid) Thornton. Dr. Thornton practiced at Hunt Memorial Hospital for over 30 years and later, for several years at Falmouth Hospital. Larry was very active within his local community and served on the board of directors for the Danvers YMCA, trustee at Maple Street Church in Danvers and was also the Masconomet Regional High School doctor for over twenty years. Larry was a graduate of Springfield College, class of 1950, and the medical school of McGill University. Larry completed his internship at Beverly Hospital and his residencies at University of Oklahoma, the Boston VA Hospital and Mass General Hospital. He served our country with the United States Navy for 4 years in the theatre of World War II, Pacific Offense as a medic.
In addition to his wife, Virginia, he is survived by three daughters, Patricia of Arizona, Bonnie and Brian Wagner of Indiana, and Sue-Wynn of Massachusetts, his two loving grandsons, Christopher and Jonathan, his two younger brothers Stan and Leslie of New Jersey and several nieces and nephews.
His Funeral Service will be held at 11AM on Monday, October 24, 2016 in Middleton Congregational Church, 66 Maple St., Middleton. Burial is private. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-5PM at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dr. Thornton’s name to the Danvers YMCA, 34 Pickering St., Danvers, MA, 01923.
I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Thornton’s passing…my family will remember him fondly as our trusted family doctor when doctors still made house calls.

I am so sorry for your loss. I will always treasure my memories of spending Christmas each year with all of you. Larry was always happy, sharing his stories, and laughing. And enjoying all of the food! He will be missed.

I’m sorry for your loss and am sorry I did not attend the wake. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. I remember your father as a kind and warm person. May God provide you with comfort as you honor your father’s memory. Thinking of you all a this very sad time.
