Daniel H. Hinkel

April 23, 1984 ~ July 20, 2022
BEVERLY- Daniel H. Hinkel, 38, passed away suddenly on July 20, 2022.
Born on April 23, 1984, in Manhattan, New York, he was the son of Jean-Denis and Amy (Freedman) Hinkel. Dan was raised in Minnetonka, MN and received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Kansas completing a semester at sea. He had been employed as the VP of Operational Administration & Distribution for AMA Transportation.
Daniel was taken far too soon from his wife of 7 years come September, Rachel Tolan and children, Weston (5), Winslow (2). Dan was a hopelessly devoted husband and father. Dan approached life with boundless joy. He “had energy for days” and an equal amount of patience. He loved to take the time to begin teaching his children to learn to swim, cook, fish, ride a scooter/bike and ski.
Dan’s jolly demeanor was infectious and affected the lives of countless people. He was a gifted storyteller, incredibly creative and persistently generous. Dan would always supply boundless fun, food and humor to any situation at any time. His creativity and love of food lead him to the kitchen daily, cooking dinner for his wife and family. Dan loved a challenge, cooking for 30 at thanksgiving and deboning a turkey, while frying a second in the driveway. He fed his charcuterie projects to friends and neighbors with gusto, convincing even the most hesitant eaters it was a good idea. He had deep love of the ocean and boats, you couldn’t see a yacht in the harbor without Dan telling you the name, make, model and owner from the app on his phone. Dan was known to bring oysters to the beach, shuck them himself, add his homemade mignonette and offer to share.
Of all his interests and hobbies Dan’s truest passion in life was taking care of his family. He learned all of the little things that made life comfortable and created ease, then served, cleaned and cared for them with joy.
In addition to his wife, children and parents, Daniel left his brother, Alexander Hinkel of CO, his father-in-law Robert Tolan of Beverly and brother-in-law, R.J. Tolan and his family of Beverly.
A celebration of Dan’s life will be held at Danversport Yacht Club, 161 Elliott St., Danvers from 4PM-8PM on Wednesday, July 27, 2022. Dan’s friends have created a site to help support Weston and Winslow, donations may be made at https://gofund.me/0ad602fb.
My memory of Dan was from the block party just had last weekend..he had me to please try the tofu skewers..with wrinkled up nose I did try it…not bad!!! He was a bad ass cook and a really great guy..he will be missed😔💙
I am truly saddened to hear about Dan. He was the second person I ever hired twenty-two years ago and he set the bar for all of the employees who have worked on the docks since at the Boat Club. He was the first to be “inducted” into our boat club hall of fame, well deserved. His nickname was The Big Man. Not only was he a great employee, he became a legend as a result of his expolits. I have many, many stories, all very funny, that I still share with current employees and there are countless memories. He was definitely the leader of our Crew and was very passionate about his job at the boat club. Kind, gentle, humorous. He’s truly one of a kind and I am heartbroken. My condolences to his entire family. Love you Big Man. Thank you for everything. Tom Jacob

Even though we had not met Daniel, we feel that we knew him through the wonderful stories told by his parents: stories of cooking, playing sports, his caring and kindness. He will be missed by all the people whose lives he touched.
