George Michallyszyn

PEABODY- George Michallyszyn passed away on August 17, 2017 in Pilgrim Nursing Home of natural causes at the age of 94.
George was born in Danvers on February 3, 1923, the son of the late John and Bessie (Chupa) Michallyszyn. George had eight siblings, all of whom predeceased him; Mike, Steve, Ann, Tony, Kay, Stanley, Charles and John. He attended Danvers public schools and graduated from Holten High School. For three years he was a stand-out football player on the Columbia Football team of the North Shore.
He served our country during WWII and was honorably discharged. He served with the 463rd Air Wing of the 15th Air Force, stationed in Foggia, Italy. He served on a B17 bomber as a Flight Engineer/ Turret Gunner. George flew 25 missions over heavily defended territory in Southern Europe, including the Ploesti oil fields in Romania and the ammunition storage areas in the Yugoslavia/ Czechoslovakia regions.
George was awarded the French “Thank-you-America” certificate, the Air Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the Victory Medal and various ribbons and certificates. He was most proud of the Purple Heart awarded for action over Munich, Germany in 1944.
George leaves two nieces, Catherine Trainor and her husband, George of Peabody and Lianne Feener of Tewksbury, three nephews, Joseph Michallyszyn of Salem, Frank Michallyszyn of Ipswich and John Michallyszyn and his wife Cam of Chelmsford and many loving grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his nephew Randy Michallyszyn.
His Funeral Services will be held privately, at the request of the family.
