Gregory (Papanicolas) Nichols

MANCHESTER, MA – Gregory Nichols passed away at home on Monday, March 15th, after an extended period of declining health. He was 94. At his side was his devoted wife of 57 years, Michaelene (Hurley) Nichols, his son Samuel and daughter Alexandra, whose loving care allowed him to stay at home. Greg was born in Peabody to the late Charles and Constantina (Tsaltas) Papanicolas. He attended Peabody High School and left prior to graduation to enlist in the Navy. He served in the Pacific Theatre aboard the U.S.S. Boxer. Upon his return from service in 1946, Gregory attended the newly established Boston University General College under the auspices of the GI Bill. He was the proprietor of Gregg Music & Vending which he ran for over 60 years. Known for his expertise in the repair of pin ball machines, juke boxes and video games of all vintages, he was a well-respected resource for younger mechanics. Greg was delighted to be featured as the Pinball Repair Wizard in David Rattigan’s 2007 Boston Globe article. Possessing many skills and abilities, Greg could repair and rebuild anything. Over the years he collected and restored antique cars. As a talented carpenter, he built many things including his sister Agnes’ house and his first boat, a 19-foot wooden in-board runabout. He enjoyed sailing and working on his sailboat well into his later years. He earned his pilot certification from the Marblehead Power Squadron and was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was a photography enthusiast in still and motion film. He enjoyed reading about World War II, saying it gave him a perspective he could not get while being in the war. Greg will be remembered and missed for being a gentle soul who was kind, understanding and generous. He was always willing to lend a hand and ready to defend anyone who was being treated unfairly. He was a true gentleman. Greg was predeceased by his brother, Louis Papanicolas and sisters Anne Adamopolous and Agnes (Karabelas) Ruggiero. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
