Martha R. (Jewett) Swindell, 74, of Danvers, died Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers surrounded by the love and support of her family. She was the wife and soulmate of Michael W. Swindell, with whom she shared forty years of marriage.
Born in Lowell on September 30, 1944, she was the daughter of Ethel (Kohler) Jewett of North Andover and the late Elwin S. Jewett. Active in local government for many years, Martha served Danvers as a selectman, a member of the Finance Committee, the Town Meeting, the Building Advisory Committee for both Holten Richmond Middle School and Danvers High School, and most recently as a member of the Board of Health.
She cherished her time spent with family, and volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and Danvers Youth Softball coach when her daughters were young. In more recent years, she enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, going to the beach, and family gatherings around the fire pit.
In addition to her husband and mother, she leaves her children, Sarah Lavigne and her husband Donald of Danvers, Amanda Carter and her husband Michael of Amesbury, and Nicholas Swindell of Danvers, her beloved grandchildren, Rebecca Lavigne and her fiancée Gen Legay, Andrew-Jason Carter, Sophia Carter, and Phoebe Swindell, her sister, Deborah Properzio and her husband Paul of Andover, her brothers, Bruce Jewett and his wife Kim of Pelham, Douglas Jewett of Morrow, GA, her sisters-in-law, Susan Tufts and Cheryl Sullivan and her husband James, her brother-in-law Kevin Swindell and his wife Tami, and many nieces and nephews.

I remember working with Martha in the late ‘80’s/early’90’s.We worked together at Hunt Hospital on the Maternity unit.
A dedicated nurse, wonderfully dedicated individual… Rest In Peace
To all of Martha’s family, our boys played hockey together many years ago. She was a lovely, kind and caring lady. I had the pleasure of spending time with Martha as her hairdresser for many years. She didn’t change….her family meant everything to her….never boasting, but just always spoke of all of them with love. Just a wonderful woman who will be missed by so many. xox Martha
Michael and family, hope you are comforted by all those who share your grief. Martha was a wonderful classmate at DHS and although we didn’t get to share a lot of time together, I remember the fun Camp Fire Girls’ Meetings when we were group leaders and shared all the fun chaos! Martha was always the same – loving, fun, and glad to see you! Loved driving by your home on Locust Street and seeing all the pretty flowers that were planted in front of the white picket fence. I know we had a few conversations about those flowers when we ran into each other in town. One would be hard pressed to find a kinder person.

I’m saddened to hear of Martha’s passing. I was honored to work at Hunt Hospital with Martha, she was consistently an example of a nurse who was dedicated to the care of the whole patient, not just the physical body. She was a great friend to me and she was so dedicated to her family. She loved you all more than anything. Martha will be missed by many and never forgotten.
