Born in:
Malden, Massachusetts
Resided in:
Beverly, Massachusetts
Michael E. Brien, 75, passed away on February 9, 2026, in the Kaplan Family Hospice House. He was the husband of Susan (Harris) Brien, with whom he shared nearly 40 years of marriage.
Born in Malden on June 5, 1950, he was the son of the late Alfred and Jean (Coughlin) Brien. Michael had a successful career as a salesman with Pepperidge Farm. He also worked at the former Middleton Golf Course for over 20 years and upon retirement from Pepperidge Farm, he worked at the Thomson Golf Club in North Reading.
Michael was an avid golfer; his thirst for adventure led him to enjoy water skiing, scuba diving and flying hot air balloons. Sunday afternoons in the fall you would find him in his easy chair, a glass of his homemade wine nearby as he cheered on the New England Patriots. A kind, generous, thoughtful neighbor, he frequently mowed their lawns and cleared snow from their driveways, expecting nothing in return. His own lawn was lush, meticulously maintained, his pride and joy and envied by many.
He especially enjoyed trips to Disney World and Disney cruises with his family.
In addition to his wife Susan, he is survived by his children Joshua Brien of Boscawen, NH, Amanda Brien of Nashua NH and Heather Brien and her husband Ali of Orlando, FL, his three grandchildren, Caden, Dylan and Camdon and his sisters, Sandy Brien of NH, Nancy Szwyd of NH and Christine Golden of FL. He was predeceased by his daughter Melissa Brien.

We remember Mike as a knowledgeable, fun and terrifically helpful volunteer at the Alfalfa Farm Winery back in the day, and a good winemaker! . May his memory bring you comfort. Cheers, Trudi Perry, AFW winemaker
To The Brien Family – I met Mike about 9 years ago when I joined Thomson. I had the pleasure of playing with him many times. He was always a true gentleman. We chatted about a lot of things on the course. He readily shared pointers on game improvement. We chatted about Disney. We both were a bit obsessive about our lawns. We helped out our neighbors and unfortunately, we had both lost daughters to cancer. He shared some insight that really resonated with me and that I have shared many times. “It will never be better…it may be a bit easier at times, but it will never be better.” He leaves an imprint not only at Thomson, but with many folks that he interacted with over the years. May he rest in peace and may you find some comfort in your memories of an all-around good guy.
To Sue and the Brien Family,
My deepest heartfelt sympathy to you all. I will miss Mike’s helping hands and his smiling face.
I always said “What did I do to deserve a neighbor like you Mike”
He was a kind big hearted soul who loved his family and took care of many.
You will be thought of often Mike as your examples of kindness, love and friendship live on.
Love, Linda A.
Thank you! Rest in peace. You will be missed. Art Dunford
