Pauline R. Armstrong

Pauline R. "Polly" (Field) Armstrong, 93, of Danvers, died peacefully on Friday, June 18, 2021 surrounded by family after a long battle with complications from COVID-19. Born in Salem on April 14, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Robert Field and Lillienne (Lucier) Field and sister to the late Odile Bertrand, Anna Robinson, and Raymond Field. She was raised and educated in Salem, MA where she met her husband, the late Paul P. Armstrong, through mutual friends. Together the two raised 6 children. Polly was a proud, lifelong Girl Scout and would gladly discuss her days as a young scout making eggs on an improvised stove made from a Maxwell House coffee can with anyone who would listen. Polly loved running formal teas at the Glen Magna Estate for the Spar and Spindle Girl Scout Council and was the curator and tour guide for the Girl Scout Museum in North Andover well into her 80s. Polly proudly boasted greater than seventy-five years as a Girl Scout and received many awards for her volunteer service. Polly will also be remembered for her expertise in manners and etiquette, outwitting anyone at a game of Chinese Checkers or Clue, telling silly, spooky stories, and baking a delicious strawberry rhubarb pie, molasses half-moon cookies, and her famous meatloaf. She loved recounting adventures on her bicycle with her childhood dog, “Tiny,” gardening in the backyard, and making scrapbooks and knitted blankets for donation. Polly was beloved by many and will be remembered as someone who could turn a complete stranger into a friend within minutes. Polly will be dearly missed by her 5 children, Paul Armstrong and his wife Betsy of Nevada, Texas, James Armstrong and his partner Linda Waldie of Beverly, Michael Armstrong and his wife Linda of Danvers, Charlene Stoffel and her husband Edward of Stephens City, Virginia, and Neal Armstrong of Gardner, her grandchildren Richard, Darcy, Grant, Brooke, Melissa, and Abby, her great-grandchildren Heidi, Emma, and Amelia and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her son, Richard Armstrong. Visiting hours for Polly will be held Wednesday, June 23, 2021 from 4:00-7:00pm at C.R. Lyons & Sons Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on June 24 at the Annunciation Cemetery, 155 Hobart St., Danvers. Please ensure that, should you not yet be fully vaccinated, your mask remains on throughout services. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Polly’s memory to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, 265 Beaver Street, Waltham, MA 02452 or online at https://www.gsema.org/en/support-us/ways-to-give.html. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I dearly loved my Aunt Pauline and I will miss her very much!!!! I got to talk to her about 2 months ago and before that we had a virtual family reunion and I will always treasure all the memories. Her brother Raymond was my dad and I’m sure the reunion is happy!

  2. Polly’s dedication to the museum was an inspiration to all of us older Girl Scouts. My troop and neighborhood borrowed many uniforms for special events and appreciated her assistance.

  5. My condolences to the family & friends of Polly. I was on vacation/out of state & unable to attend any of her services. I’ve know Polly for many years thru Girl Scouting, during 3 GS councils, beginning with Hawthorne. As all who knew her, she loved Girl Scouting & was passionate! about sharing it with many others. As her obit. stated, she was involved in coordinating the “Teas” in Danvers for many years. These very popular programs were attended by many girls & adults. And she many know, she contributed many hours & much research/knowledge to our councils’ museums-so others might learn more about Girl Scouting. I also knew her in other capacities & at other events over the years, including going to GS Conventions around the country. She contributed much to Girl Scouting. She will be missed. She is now joining many other good women, including many other active volunteers from Danvers/North Shore, in GS heaven. May she Rest In Peace. Skip Carver, Winthrop.
