Robert G. Osgood

Danvers- Robert G. Osgood, 89, passed away surrounded by his family on June 13, 2019. He was the husband of the late Josephine (Gajewski) (Pref) Osgood with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.
Born in Danvers on October 25, 1929, he was the son of the late Lucius and Josephine (Curran) Osgood. Bob was a lifelong resident of Danvers. He graduated from Holten High School in 1948. He attended Stockbridge School at University of Massachusetts to study floriculture. Bob had several jobs throughout his life. He worked at the Pingree Farm, Ives Floriculture, Peter Previte in Boston and Cullen Fuel and was co-owner of Spite Bridge Boatyard with his brother, Dick. He became a Danvers Fire Fighter in 1957 and retired after 30 years of service in 1987. He was one of the first EMT’s on the department and was also part of their scuba diving team. He had been in the Submarine Reserves for eight years and was recently recognized for his service.
Bob was an active member of the Danvers community. He was a founding member of the Danvers Alarm List Company in 1974. He had been a town meeting member for over fifty years and was on several conservation and historical boards. He played an important role in implementing the rail trail. Bob was the caretaker of the Rebecca Nurse Homestead for many years. He enjoyed talking to visitors and sharing the history of Olde Salem Village, Rebecca Nurse and the witch trials. He was a member of the Polish Club and the Knights of Columbus. He was a constant presence at the town hall and loved his hometown.
His greatest love was his family, his late wife, Josephine, his late son, David, his three daughters, Roberta McElwain and her husband Ron, Joanna McDonald and her late husband Bruce, Joyce Clemenzi and her husband, Rob, his grandchildren, Ida Mae Campbell and her husband, Bob, Jeremy Osgood, Keely McElwain, Candice Elizabeth Dawes and her husband, Chris and Sara McElwain, two great grandchildren, Sam and Jack. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Osgood and his wife, Mary Ann, a daughter-in-law, Deborah Jenkins, several nieces and nephews and a dear friend, John Henry Dabrieo.
Bob’s family would like to thank the staff at Genesis at Hathorne Hill for the care given to him for the past five years.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9AM on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 in Saint Richard Church, 90 Forest St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers. Visitation will be held from 4-7PM on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Bob’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Pl, Memphis, TN, 38105 or the Danvers Alarm List Co., PO Box 456, Hathorne, MA, 01937.
Roberta, so sorry to read this sad news. I remember both of your parents. I would usually see them when I rode my bike “way up” Forest Street. They were always so friendly and would wave and call hello to me as I rode by. I tried to keep in mind that the “haunted house” was their house and surely it was not REALLY haunted as I crept through each year, pretty much scared witless. Prayers to you and all of your family.

I will always admire and respect Bob. He was and will always remain a great gift to the town of Danvers.

He was my father-in-law and even after the passing of his son/ I never stopped calling him Dad!I have so many great memories of him, Mom, and the whole family. He always had a smile and a twinkle in his eye. Even my last visit he still had it. Always remembered and loved by all.
