Virginia I. Hill

November 3, 1937 ~ October 10, 2017
Virginia Irene (Mahn) Hill, 79, of Danvers, MA, went to live with the Lord on October 10th, 2017.
Virginia was born November 3rd, 1937, to the late Irene Caroline (Weber) and Otto Herman Mahn in Boston, MA. A graduate of Weymouth High School, she studied at Tufts University and Drew University, earning her degree in Art History. She went on to earn Graduate credits in Pre-Colombian Art History from the University of the Americas, Mexico City.
She worked as a typesetter, living in Greenwich Village, NYC, before working at the Canton Journal in Canton, MA.
An accomplished artist, Virginia was a past President and Lifetime Member of the Danvers Art Association. She served on the Board of the North Shore Arts Association. Virginia’s award-winning watercolors are inspired by and celebrate the natural beauty of Boston’s North Shore and Cape Ann. Her artist’s eye was often drawn to lighthouses, historic sites, and the simple treasures of beach life.
In 2000, Hill founded the Virginia Hill Gallery on Bearskin Neck in Rockport. While she received Excellence Awards and Blue Ribbon Awards for her artwork, she was very proud to have a famous patron, Stephen Spielberg, purchase her Motif #1 painting while he was filming and vacationing in the area.
Having a deep appreciation for the Arts, Virginia frequented the symphonies, shows, and museums of the greater Boston area. She also made time for another area favorite, and her favorite as well, Dunkin’ Donuts.
Virginia’s love of travel and adventure led her all over the globe, from our domestic shorelines to Peru and Russia. Always an enthusiastic “tour guide” to visiting family and friends, she graciously shared her passion for local history, fresh seafood, and the scenic beauty she often captured in watercolor.
Virginia enjoyed playing Bridge, and delighted in the regular fellowship of her cherished friends.
Virginia is predeceased by her husband, Richard Hill, a brother, the Reverend David Paul Mahn, and sister-in-law, Janice Irene Mahn.
The friends and family Virginia leaves behind will miss her infectious laugh, her adventurous spirit, her zest for life, and her deep love of those dear to her.
She is survived by her brother, Edward B. Mahn of Flemington, NJ, and sister-in-law Joyce Mahn of Canton, MA. She will be greatly missed by her nephew, Jeffrey Mahn of Ottawa, Canada, her nieces Sharon Mahn of Manhattan, Kristin Mahn Ervin of Emmaus, PA, Susan Komorowski of Clinton, NJ, Laura Mahn Stout of Scituate, MA, her namesake Amy Virginia Mahn of Arlington, VA, and her 7 grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be on Friday, November 10th, 11am, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 708 Lowell St, Lynnfield, MA.
Interment will be at the Gardens at Gethsemane in West Roxbury, MA.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to the Danvers Art Association, Danvers, Massachusetts, to fund a scholarship for a Danvers High School student planning to study art; the Trustees of Reservations, Beverly, MA; Messiah Lutheran Church in Lynnfield, MA, and Alcoholics Anonymous GSO, New York, NY.
