John Leroy Baker, a proud Dad and Papa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 21st, 2026 at 7:30pm EST in Danvers, Massachusetts at New England Homes of the Deaf where he was a resident since April 2024.
John was born July 28, 1945 in Picher, Oklahoma, but spent his life in California. He was an alumnus of California School for the Deaf-Berkeley where he played football and basketball. John’s careers were a car mechanic and pressman for many years. His hobbies were fixing classic cars: VWs, Corvettes and Coopers. He also loved playing poker with his buddies for many years. John was a true loyal fan of the 49ers and the Warriors. He was knowledgeable in sports and loved to talk about it. Dad was always showing his kids, Victor, William and Carla how to fix and work on cars. John enjoyed working landscaping projects alongside his son-in-law, Daryl Wetzel.
John loved to have fun, his nieces and nephews have many good memories with him. He was a silly Papa who was up for anything to make his grandchildren laugh!
John was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Norma (Eubanks) Baker of Grass Valley, CA, his H siblings, Videne (Baker) Dodson, Sharon (Baker) Howell, Robert Baker and Patricia (Baker) Lee.
John is survived by his children, Victor Furr of Livermore, CA, William Furr of Paso Robles, CA and Carla Wetzel (Baker) of Paso Robles, CA. John’s grandchildren: Zachary Baker, Travis Furr, Emma Furr, Haley Furr and Hannah Wetzel.

John and I had a wonderful time working together at the day program. I was blessed to have him care for my dogs in the past. He also loved to spoil the dogs, and they were always well cared for. 🩷🐶🐾🙏🤟

I was fortunate enough to meet John through my friendship with his daughter Carla. As I told her, whenever he was around I felt welcomed. Aside from some funny incidents, this will be my fondest memory.
