Dr. Alexis A. Caron, 89, of Danvers, Massachusetts, formerly of Auburn, Maine, died peacefully surrounded by family on February 13, 2015. Alex was born on December 2, 1925 to Adelbert and Laura (Pelletier) Caron in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts. A graduate of Springfield Technical High School, he served in World War II with the 87th Division Infantry Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop in the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe Campaigns. He attended Middlebury College Summer School of Languages and received his BA from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and his MA and PhD from the University of Minnesota. Alex taught French at Proctor Academy in Andover, New Hampshire, Arizona State University (Tempe), Bowling Green State University (Ohio), the Colby College Summer School of Languages, and for 29 years at Bates College. During his twelve years on the Durham School Board, he served as a member of the Maine School Boards Association and was on numerous educational committees at the state and national level. As he and his wife Helen raised their family, they lived in Lewiston, in Durham for many years, and then in Auburn before moving to Danvers, Massachusetts in 2011. Alex was predeceased by Helen (Stark), his wife of 53 years, and his five sisters, Claire Murtaugh, Laurette Caron, Irene Pamerleau, Irma Caron and Aline Ward. He is survived by his four children, Amy Pierce and her husband Jack of Winchester MA, Elise and her companion Charles Proulx of Hebron ME, Philip and his wife Donna of Rockport ME, and John and his wife Alicia of Boxford MA; his eight beloved grandchildren, Ian, Lindsay, Caroline, Nathan, Mallory, Thomas, Will and Maggie; and many loving nieces and nephews. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 23, 2015 at 10AM in Saint Richard Church, 90 Forest St., Danvers. Relatives and friends are invited. Visitation will be prior to the Mass from 8:45AM-9:45AM in C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital www.stjude.org or a charity of your choice.
