Alfred Michael Powers, 77, died Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at home surrounded by his loving family following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Carol-Ann (Spears) Powers, with whom he shared fifty-eight years of marriage. Born in Peabody on February 7, 1934, he was the son of the late Arthur and Ida (Deschenes) Powers. He was raised and educated in Danvers and was a graduate of Holten High School, Class of 1952. He then served honorably as a member of the U.S. Navy Seabees during the Korean War. For thirty-seven years, Mike was a lineman for New England Telephone and had served as a past president of the IBEW Union. A lifelong Danvers resident, he was an active volunteer for youth and school sports. He was a founder and longtime game official of Danvers Youth Football and was instrumental in the lighting of Deering Field. He was a founding member of the Blue & White Club and was a former Town Meeting Member. In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Doucette and her husband Michael of Westbrook, ME and Kathryn Murphy and her husband Patrick of Duxbury, three sons, Michael W. Powers and his wife Maureen of Danvers, David J. Powers of Madeira Beach, FL, and Kevin J. Powers and his wife Robin of Highland Park, IL, two sisters, Phyllis Grant of NY and Judith D’Amato of FL, 22 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sons, Douglas J. Powers and Scott T. Powers, and a brother, Arthur L. Powers. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 3, 2011 at 10AM in St. Richard Church, 90 Forest St., Danvers. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Sunday from 3-7PM in C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mike’s memory may be made to the Danvers Kiwanis Foundation Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 92, Danvers, MA 01923.
