Guestbook

  1. My condolences and prayers to Brother Pat’s Family. He was my Track and Field coach for 4 years
(1985-1989) at Xaverian HS. He taught me that accountability matters. He will be missed.

  2. My favorite teacher throughout my 4 years, 1966-70 , we knew him as Brother Gavril, or mon ami, he was kind, generous, a great teacher and friend. What a life well-lived! Prayers for him and his family❤️

    • Yes, I ran track from 1962 to 1966 and Brother Gavril was always encouraging and in good spirits. He was quick with a corny joke. I remember one of his favorites: ‘ where does a sheep get sheared? In a Baa Baa shop’.

  3. 2/28/2026
It is with great sadness to learn of Bro. Pat’s passing. I remember him fondly as guidance counsellor when I was at Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NYC in the 70s. May he rest in peace and his memory be a blessing.
Stephen R. Rolandi, Class of ’72, XHS.

  4. Brother Pat always encouraged us. He was so caring and supportive on the track or the guidance office. Can still see his smile. I’m glad he got to see his beloved Red Sox win the World Series.

    Track and Field, 1968-1972

  5. Truly blessed to have had his guidance and support during those formative years. One tough, but fun loving gentleman. Thanks for everything Brother Pat! Rest in peace. Track and Field, 1977-1981

  6. I was one of his early students at Xaverian and provided the enormous challenge for him to try and teach me French. He must have orchestrated a minor miracle as I did remarkable well on my first trip to Paris. He was also a super track coach who had no problem sending an exhausted harrier out for one more trip around the track.

    May he rest in peace!

  7. One of the nicest Brother that taught in Xaverian. I never had him as a teacher but he was one of my guidance counselors. I remember him always with a smile, a kind word, and always offering to help us when needed. Really good man, and now, he got his wings.
    Albert Filosa class of 1972

  8. Brother Pat was a great teacher, coach and friend to many of us who were honored to know him. His patience and understanding fostered the maturation of his students. May he be blessed with his eternal reward. Rest in Peace.

    Track and Field 1966-1970

  9. Brother Pat was my track coach, with Frank McCartney from 1965 to 1969. He had a unique sense of humor also. In March 1969 our school participated in the Milrose Games in the new Madison Square Garden. I was part of the Distant Medley team, Brother Pat told me during warmups, he was praying for me. I thanked him thinking he wanted us to do well in the race. He told me he was praying, that I wouldn’t drop the baton at a national televised event. We all laughed, and we ran well that night.
I know Brother Pat is now telling more jokes to all his fellow brother’s that went before him.
    Rest in peace my friend.

  14. May You Rest in Peace, Bro. Pat.
My sincere condolences to your family & fellow Brothers.

Bro. Pat’s mantra, “Read, read, read…”, was his way to convince us that we’d only succeed on many levels if we became voracious readers. While many scoffed at his insistence, he was indeed correct. Years later, I gladly thanked him. As a proud member of the varsity championship track team, I also appreciated his guidance & inspiration.

    Robert Windorf, Ed.D.
    Xaverian HS, Class of 1976

  15. Adieu mon petit frère! Brother Gavril was a kind and generous man who always had a twinkle in his eye. He was patient beyond belief in teaching French and other student endeavors.
May he rest in peace. My condolences to his CFX brothers and his family.

    Ray Willson, ‘67

  16. Brother Patrick was truly a gentleman and a scholar. I have only fond memories of my interactions with him.
He had a great sense of humor and his smile was engaging and uplifting.

  17. My parents became very close to Bro. Pat through his leadership of the Xaverian Circle. He was one of their favorites, and mine. Rest in Peace.

    Peter Adornato, ’76

  18. The photo of Brother Pat captures the quality that, for me, best characterizes him – his ready, welcoming smile. How many young men would he greet in the corridors with that smile! He was so genuine, and had a way to put people at ease, including so many teenagers, me included. May he enjoy his reward with the Lord.

  19. I had Brother Gavril for religion during senior year and knew him as my teacher. I got to know him years later as a person known as Brother Pat when we worked together to restore the Alumni Association. He was witty, funny, knowledgeable and dedicated. He was a person that you looked forward to seeing again. He will be missed. RIP, Brother Pat.

  20. My condolences to the family and fellow Brothers of Brother Pat. Thank you for your guidance and for your dedication to restoring our Alumni association. May Brother Pat rest in eternal peace.
    Mike Wilson, Class of 1977

  21. My deepest condolences to both the family and the fellow Xaverian Brothers of Brother Patrick I. Pennell, CFX. May Brother Gavril Rest In Peace.

  22. Brother Pat had the right demeanor for teaching, counseling, training, winning, and coming up with the right words when you did not do your best. My deepest sympathy for his family and the Xaverian Brothers. Coach, thanks for all the selfless hours. Track and field 1976-1980.
RIP, Joe Murach, Class of 1980

  23. In 1962, Frank, Paul and I knew Brother Pat as Brother Gavril. At Xaverian HS in Brooklyn, NY Brother Gavril was our track coach and he was a Fun Track Coach. And yes, he was serious when serious was called for.
Brother Gavril was also my Spanish teacher in the 1962 and 1963 school years at Xaverian. As you can tell, I remember him to this day.

  24. Brother Pat, to me Brother Gavril, was a wonderful man and teacher. My favorite teacher and person during my years at Xaverian
