Lynn, Massachusetts
D. Edward Dooley, 79, of Lynn, a devoted educator whose life’s work was measured in the students he encouraged, the colleagues he supported, and the communities he enriched, died November 5, 2026, at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital following a period of declining health.
Born on October 19, 1947, he was the son of the late Daniel J. and Edwina (Honen) Dooley. Raised in Saugus, Ed graduated from St. Mary’s Boys High School in Lynn with the Class of 1965. He went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Boston College and a master’s degree from Assumption College.
Ed was a teacher’s teacher. His knowledge was broad, his curiosity enduring, and his commitment to the classroom the defining thread of his life. He seemed capable of teaching almost anything, but the subject was only part of what he offered. Just as important were the relationships he built—with students discovering their abilities, with fellow teachers sharing the work, and with the staff whose daily efforts sustained a school. Wherever he taught, Ed became part of the life of the place, giving generously of his time, his talents, and himself.
His teaching career took him to St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury, Malden Catholic, and schools in England, France, and Italy. Each community became part of his story, and he, in turn, became part of theirs.
Among the most meaningful chapters of Ed’s life were his years ministering to the community at Covenant House in New York City. That work held a lasting place in his heart. The people he encountered and the experiences he carried from those years often found their way into his classroom, connecting lessons on the page with the complexities of people’s lives. Covenant House remained an essential part of who he was and how he understood his responsibility to others.
In the early 1990s, Ed joined the faculty at St. John’s Prep in Danvers, where he taught English, history, and foreign language for over twenty years. Versatile and always willing to lend a hand, he brought to the school the devotion that had marked his entire career. For Ed, teaching was never simply the delivery of a lesson. It was the daily work of being present, sharing what he knew, and helping others find their way toward understanding. His life was the classroom, and his influence will continue in the lives of those who learned beside him and from him.
Outside of school, Ed treasured time with family and friends and enjoyed the occasional show or concert. The companionship of those he loved was an enduring source of happiness.
He leaves his siblings, Steven Dooley of Lynn and Maureen Stewart of Lowell; his sister-in-law, Lisa Dooley of Andover; his nieces, Erin Tobin, Sara Corcoran, Fiona Dooley, Brigid Dooley, and Mariah Dooley; his great-niece and great-nephews, Gabriella, Jackson, and Henry; and his dear friend and beloved cousin, Betty Marino. He also leaves many cherished friends, colleagues, and former students who remember him with affection and gratitude. He was predeceased by his brother, David Dooley.
