SALEM-Daniel F. “Whitey” Mahoney, 73, passed away on April 17, 2023, in his home following a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family and closest friends. He was the husband of Carol (Soucy) Mahoney with whom he shared 38 years of marriage. Born in Danvers on November 21, 1949, he was the son of the late Raymond and Lois (Chase) Mahoney. Dan was raised and educated in Danvers and Boxford. He graduated from Masconomet Regional High School in 1968 where he played hockey, track, and football. He was a natural athlete and lettered in hockey and track. He made many lifelong friendships here, especially with his four closest friends; Rick, Mac, Bill, and George who he referred to as his brothers. In addition to his wife Carol, he is survived by two daughters, Lauren MacKinnon and her husband Eric of Haverhill and Sara Latini of Salem, two granddaughters Sienna and Teaghen MacKinnon, and his brother Raymond Mahoney of Georgetown and Steve Mahoney of Maine. He was predeceased by his sister Karen Bishop. Dan served our country during the Vietnam War with the United States Army and was honorably discharged. He was the owner and operator of Dan Mahoney Plumbing & Heating for 35 years until his retirement. Dan took great pride in his plumbing business and mentored many young men into the trade. Dan enjoyed the outdoors and loved mountain climbing, skiing, and softball. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Beverly Golf and Tennis Men’s League. He and his wife Carol loved to travel together to the Caribbean Islands, Italy, and his favorite place, Ireland. He enjoyed playing cards with his “brothers” and spending quality time with friends and family. He also loved a good cigar with his neighbor on his front porch. Dan was a family man who was devoted to his wife, daughters, and granddaughters. He was a very proud “Papa” of his granddaughter's achievements and loved watching them play sports. He was a great man and will be missed by all that knew him. He always had a kind word for everyone, a great sense of humor, and lived his life to the fullest. His funeral service will be held privately at a later date in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Daniel’s name to the Disabled Veterans www.dav.org or the charity of your choice.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. We remember all the fun Whitey brought to every occasion. The last time we saw him was at Eric’s birthday. He was as always in great spirits and we all had a wonderful evening. He was an amazing contractor. Every home he remodeled looked like HGTV even better. He did so much for his family and provided a wonderful life for Lauren, Carol and Sarah. He even remodeled our home when Lindsay was injured. He was just a very kind person.

  2. Carol. I a very sorry for your loss. Thinking and praying for you during this difficult time. Sara, I am also sending prayers your way. – Lynne Malevich

  3. I have known Danny ( Whitey ) for 4 years. I am one of his next door neighbors. In that time, we became good friends and spent a lot of time on his front porch. We would pass out dog treats to people walking by with their dogs, and try to solve all the problems of the world! Danny had a huge sense of humor, and we did A Lot of laughing! I will miss those fun times, and will always remember them. Rest in peace good friend. 🙏🙏 Tom
