Dorothy A. Gibney

Dorothy A. Gibney, 71, a longtime Danversport resident, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2014 at the Kaplan House in Danvers. She was surrounded in love, with her family and friends at her side. Dorothy entered this life on June 27, 1942, as the eldest child of Michael and Sophie (Zielska) Zuk. She graduated from Holten High School in Danvers, Class of 1960. Her education after high school included attendance at Salem State College and Northeastern University, where she earned a certificate in drafting. She and her former husband, Lee “Pete” Gibney, founded Gibney Gardens, a successful local farm retail establishment on South Liberty Street in Danversport. Dorothy later obtained a state Certified Pesticide License and worked at Kane’s Flower World in Danvers. She became a longtime employee of Danversport Yacht Club. Breast cancer struck her in 2013 and she was supported through this ordeal by the Delorenzo family and the entire staff of the Danversport Yacht Club and her numerous friends and family. She was a generous and loyal friend who donated her personal time to many civic events, namely: more than thirty years as a volunteer with the Topsfield Fair, where she was nominated “Department Chairman of the Flower Division” in 2010 and for many years, she was known as the “Popcorn Lady” for the Danversport Christmas event, “Santa by Sea”. Her family and many friends will truly miss her and her courageous spirit. In addition to her former husband, she leaves her brother, Michael Zuk and his wife Janelle and their children Jolene and Liam of North Hampton, NH, her nephews David Morin and his wife Michelle and Richard Morin, her cousins, Peter Zuk and his wife Jodi, Norman Zuk, Karlene Zuk, Gregory Zuk, Marilyn Nugent and her husband John, Jason Pelletier and his wife Carol, Paris Pelletier and his wife Nanci Lee, and her aunt, Laura Pope. Besides her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her sister, Nancy Morin and her aunts and uncles Carl and Sena Zuk, Stacia and Eugene Pelletier, Lt. Col. Julian Zuk, Peter Zuk and his wife Geraldine, and Kristine Zuk. She had “special friends” whose lives intertwined with hers. They were her beloved ompanion Don Duggan of Peabody, Carolyn Dabose and Andrea Daley of Danvers, whom she referred to as her “sisters”, Mike, Michael, and Dr. Douglas Daley of Danvers, Joan George of Danvers, and Janice Galipeau of Beverly. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 2, 2014 from 10AM to 12PM in C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. A Prayer Service will follow immediately at 12PM.
