DR. RICHARD A. MCMANUS

Dr. Richard Ambrose McManus, died Tuesday, August 18, 2009 surrounded by his family at Ledgewood Nursing home, he was 81 years old. He was born in Elizabeth, NJ on February 13, 1928, son of Catherine and Ambrose McManus. He graduated from The Pingry School in Elizabeth, NJ; Princeton University, class of 1949; New York Medical College class of 1954; and did his radiological residency at Mary Hitchcock Hospital at Dartmouth College, Hanover N.H. He served his country as a Captain in the Air Force in Bangor Maine, and received his Fellowship of American College of Radiology in 1984. Dr. McManus joined North Shore Radiological Associates in 1959 and practiced primarily at Hunt Memorial Hospital in Danvers, MA. At Hunt Memorial, he was chief of radiology from 1965 on, and served as president of the Hunt medical staff from 1970-1973, and chief of staff from 1978-1984. Dr. McManus was instrumental in the establishment of several new services offered at Hunt Hospital, including nuclear medicine in 1969, ultrasound in 1975, and he introduced the innovative medical technology of Computed Axial Tomography (CAT) in 1978. Dr. McManus retired from medicine in 1993. Dick enjoyed playing golf and was a longtime member of the Salem Country Club and the Algonquin Club of Boston. He is predeceased by his wife Kathleen O’Neill, siblings Kathleen Dixon, John McManus and William McManus and son- in- law Andrew East. He is survived by his sister Nancy Cole of Eliot, ME., his children, Kathleen East of Denver, CO; Deborah French and her husband William of Essex, MA; Mary Reinhardt, her husband Kevin of York, ME; Deirdre McManus and her husband Steven Balk of Hamilton, MA; and Richard McManus Jr. of Marshfield, MA. He leaves his grandchildren, William and Elizabeth East, Lydia and Hillary French, Audrey, Ellie and John Reinhardt, Rebecca and Suzanne Balk, Riley, Caroline and Catherine McManus. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 11am at St Mary of the Annunciation Church, 24 Conant St, Danvers. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception immediately following at the Danversport Yacht Club.
