Evelyn H. Dwinell
May 25, 1925 ~ June 11, 2023
TOPSFIELD- Evelyn H. (Nelson) Dwinell, 98, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2023, in Beverly Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife for 37 years of the late John W. “Bud” Dwinell, a mail carrier who died in 1985.
Born in Peabody, MA, on May 25, 1925, Evelyn was the daughter of the late Sven and Ethel (Lilja) Nelson. She was raised and educated in Danvers, MA, and graduated from Holten High School in 1943. She received her degree as a registered nurse from Salem Teaching School in 1946 and undertook a lifelong caregiving career that she sustained until she was well past 70 years old. She started her nursing career in Salem Hospital, moved on to private care in Dr. Lois Rogers office in Topsfield, MA, and was also a home healthcare nurse to many in the Topsfield community.
In addition to nursing, Evelyn’s life was defined by four additional passions: her deep love of her family and her involvement with them in all aspects of their lives throughout school and sporting events, weddings, births and joyous celebrations; her avid work supporting the family’s multi-generational Holiday (Christmas) Tree Farm in Topsfield; her annual participation in Topsfield Strawberry Festival each June, and her passion for travel. Right up until her recent passing, Evelyn enjoyed going to new places, meeting new people and was known for her gracious smile given to everyone she met.
She was a longtime member of the Topsfield Congregational Church and the Topsfield Historical Society, where she participated in many of their events and activities. In her quiet moments, you could find her knitting or happily working in her garden, enjoying nature, bird watching and telling stories about her Swedish roots and traditions.
Evelyn is survived by her four sons, John Dwinell and his wife, Kymberlee of Fairfax Station, VA; Leonard Dwinell and his wife Barbara of Cochranville, PA, David Dwinell of Duxbury, MA, and Scott Dwinell and his wife Terry of Topsfield. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Tre, Jessica, Kyra, Morgan, Hanna, Haley, Elizabeth and Andrew; two great grandchildren, Leighton and Weston; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Betty Pennell and Bud Nelson.
Evelyn’s funeral services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan St., Danvers, MA, 01923 or The Plummer Youth Promise at https://plummeryouthpromise.org. Online condolences are available at www.LyonsFuneral.com
Lynn was such a lovely woman, and I know how much you will all miss her. Loving memories, thoughts and prayers from New Jersey. Mike and Lisa Carney
Our deepest sympathy for the loss of your beloved mother and grandmother Evelyn. I always enjoyed seeing her on the porch when I would come in late spring/early summer with her dog sitting proudly at her side. We would cheer and salute that Spring had arrived once again. I loved seeing her beautiful gardens and bird houses out back. When it was time to go to the Holiday Tree Farm to cut down our Christmas Tree, Evelyn would be there to serve hot chocolate. She was a lovely lady full of happiness and kindness. Know that so many will miss her laugh and beautiful smile when visiting the Holiday Tree Farm. Sincerely, Colleen Ciocca and family.
Known Lynne since the early 1980s. Extraordinary lady, with a wonderful family, she added something to every occasion with her zest for life.
Sorry for your loss, Scott and Terry, and the rest of the family.
Absolutely beautiful, her beautiful smile being surrounded by family and friends 🥰
