Frank H. Spencer
October 25, 2011
Frank Henry Spencer, 92, died Oct. 25, 2011. Spencer was physical director at the Lynn YMCA for several decades. Prior to working in Lynn he worked at the Hartford, Conn., and Lowell YMCAs. After his retirement he worked at the Far Corner Golf Course in West Boxford. Frank was born on Feb. 25, 1919, to the late Robert and Grace Spencer. He graduated from Northampton High School and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and took courses at Springfield College. He was married to Eleanor Johnson Spencer for 50 years until her death in 1996. Frank was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving in New Guinea and the Philippines. After Eleanor's death Frank met Anna Holley, who became his second wife and died in 2007. They lived in Crawfordville, Georgia, during part of their marriage. He leaves his daughters, Marjory Spencer of Beverly and Buffy Spencer of Agawam. He also leaves a stepdaughter from his marriage to Anna Holley, Ivy Baughn of Gloucester, and Buffy Spencer's longtime companion, Donald E. Williams Jr., with whom Frank had developed a special bond. He leaves three nieces and two nephews. Until late summer Frank was still going to the Danvers YMCA where he lifted weights, always the oldest person in the room. A member of the VFW, Frank went to the Danvers Senior Center, where he made many new friends. He was a member of the First Church of Danvers Congregational, where he had served as deacon, reader and choir member over the years. Frank was an excellent badminton player and excelled at horseshoes. He had been an avid fisherman, holding numerous fishing derbies for children from the YMCA day camp. Funeral services will be Friday, October 28, 2011 at 11AM in C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. A visitation will precede the services from 10-10:45AM. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of Danvers Congregational, 41 Centre St., Danvers, MA 01923 or the Danvers Senior Center, 25 Stone St., Danvers, MA 01923.
My Condolences to the Spencer Family: I remember Frank at the Lynn YMCA; he was a great individual who treated the membership with kindness and courtesy. He had the activities ready for members to participate, and he actively enjoyed playing in the games with the members. Frank was fun to compete against. My deepest condolences to his family.
I remember Mr. Spencer from when as a child, our family of 8 children were members of the Lynn YMCA. Every Saturday night we went to family swim and I will always remember the great welcome as he greeted my parents. Not many were so welcoming to such a large family! We were once chosen Family of the Year, and we all remember that happy time. Thank you Mr. Spencer for helping provide those warm memories. With deepest sympathy to the Spencer Family from the Forbush Family of Nahant.
