George A. Bannon, Sr.

George A. Bannon Sr, formerly of Somerville and long-time Danvers resident, passed away suddenly January 3, 2013 at Beverly Hospital while surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Bannon graciously served our country as a member of the United States Army stationed in Japan during World War II. He was a charter member and past Commander of the James A. Logan Post in Somerville. Mr. Bannon was very close to and proud of his son, George A. Bannon Jr. Together they volunteered for the Danvers American Little League for many years. In 1969 with Sr. as Manager and Jr. the coach they brought the Danvers American Little League All Star team to the Massachusetts state championship. This was the last time a team from Danvers won the state title. Mr. Bannon had a zest for life and enjoyed traveling the country in his El Camino, working on his home and yard, and golfing. He was a strong family man who brought his family and friends together annually by hosting a Labor Day cookout for the past 52 years. He was a loyal season ticket holder for the Boston Bruins during the Bobby Orr era. Mr. Bannon is survived by his loving son George Jr. and his wife Kathy (of Danvers), two granddaughters: Heather (of Danvers) and Holly (of Ocala, FL). He was predeceased by his Brothers Stan, Larry, and Bob Bannon and his sister Sally Harper. He leaves behind many friends and family members and his two grand-dogs Dylan and Gizmo. He will be sadly missed by all. His Graveside service will be held on January 8, 2013 at 11AM in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Medford St., Arlington. Visiting hours are Monday from 2-4PM and 6-8PM at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St, Danvers. In Lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in George’s name to the American Heart Assoc., 20 Speen St, Framingham, MA 01701.
