Giovanni Gesualdi

giovanni gesualdi
Giovanni “John” Gesualdi, 84, died peacefully on Tuesday evening, July 25, 2023 with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Guiseppina Gesualdi, with whom he shared sixty years of marriage. Born in Panni, Italy on April 12, 1939, he was the son of the late Arcangelo and Costanza Gesualdi. He was raised and educated in Panni and served in the Italian Army before immigrating to the United States in 1962 at age 23, settling in Danvers. He began his career working as a barber for fifteen years, during which time he acquired his first multi-family home where he raised his family. He purchased additional residential real-estate which led him to become a property owner-manager. Giovanni enjoyed spending time improving his properties himself. Handling the many property repairs showed his many talents, and he had a passion for bathroom tiling. In 1981 he purchased the Plaza Motel in Peabody which he operated with his family for thirty-four years. He also owned and operated the Malden Motel for fourteen years. In 1986, Giovanni built his own home where he enjoyed gardening and growing his own crops and distilling his own wine every Columbus Day. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He adored and loved his children and grandchildren. He was a hardworking man with a huge heart who took pleasure in helping family and friends. After his retirement, he enjoyed spending the winter months in Hallandale, Florida at his condo on the ocean. He was a huge inspiration who will be deeply missed. In addition to his wife, he leaves four children, Costanzo Gesualdi and his wife Allison of Danvers, Angelina Gesualdi-Hurley of Middleton, Danny Gesualdi of Danvers, and Lisa Robinson of Danvers, six grandchildren, John P. Hurley, Jr., Vanessa Hurley, Kayla Robinson, Tyler Robinson, Nicholas Robinson, and Rachel Evans, three sisters, Anna Calitri, Grace Mastrangelo, and Maria Tofalo, all of Danvers, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, John P. Hurley, Sr. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 31, 2023 at 10AM in Saint Mary of the Annunciation Church, 24 Conant St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Sunday from 4-7PM in C.R. Lyons & Sons Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. 1. Mr Gesualdi was a kind and gentle soul! I will miss our conversations together in Italian and sharing our Italian heritage when he was taking his daily walks in the neighborhood! He reminded me so much of my own Dad. Rest in peace Mr. Gesualdi, you will be so missed! ❤️🙏

  2. Lisa and family, We are saddened by the loss of your Father. I have such fond memories of him when we were kids hanging out at your house. Please give our condolences to your mom. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Kristen and Anthony Meriano

  3. I have very fond memories of Mr. Gesualdi as well as his family. As a kid in his barber’s chair he had a way to keep me sitting still. I still behave myself in a barber’s chair because of him. Very sorry for your loss, folks, your dad was a really nice guy. Bill Bornstein

  4. We are so sad to lose our wonderful neighbor and friend. John would always stop to chat, bring us fresh veggies from his garden and tease me as I left for work in the morning saying “They let you take care of my grandchildren at that school? Be good to them! ”
We serve much love to his immediate and extended family. The DeBenedicts Family

  5. I am so sorry for the loss of John. He was truly the kindest, sweetest man I ever knew. He will be greatly missed. Prayers for his wife and wonderful family. Annette Palermo

  6. Giovanni (John) and I had a great many conversations on many issues over the years. I would always stop at the Plaza Motel when I was passing by. Josephina and John always busy doing laundry, making up rooms, or fixing something broken. A couple of times he was cutting hair for one of his friends. His memories of Danvers were fun to learn. We always talked business and I couldn’t put anything past him! Later on I would visit him at his home and he was still always working on his garden or wine or taking a walk. Thank you for all your advice over the years. And the vegetables and wine also. Condolences to your family.

Until we meet again, Tom Manuel

  7. My deepest condolences to the entire Gesualdi family. Mr. Gesualdi was my 1st barber & a wonderful man whom I was fortunate to know for many years through his wonderful family. A man of few words but big actions. Jon Crowley

  8. Dear Giuseppina and family,
Please accept our deepest sympathy at this sad time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We have only the fine praise of his finest character. We never forget his multiple offers as we visited Danvers for us to stay overnight to avoid driving at night. Rest peaceful Giovanni.
