Harry T. Mackel, 95, died at a local rehabilitation center. He was the husband of Evelyn (Hoare) Mackel with whom he shared 68 years of marriage. Born in Greece he was the son of the late Harry and Olympia (Stellas) Mackel. Mr. Mackel spent most of his life in Danvers. He had been employed at the former Day’s Baby Shoe Factory for many years prior to taking a job with the town. Harry worked for the Danvers School Department for many years as a custodian and crossing guard. Harry served his country on the U.S.S. Bailey with the United States Navy during WWII and was honorably discharged. Harry enjoyed carpentry but his true love was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Besides his wife, Evelyn, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Steven and Kathy Mackel of Pepperell, two daughters and sons-in-law, Dawn and Michael Papamichael of Danvers and Sandra and Paul Rau of AZ, a brother William Mackel of NH, two sisters Katherine Kontos of Danvers and Sultana Vergis of IL, seven grandchildren, John and his wife Nancy, Christopher and his wife Maureen and Amy Papamichael, Nathan and Andrew Rau, Daniel and his wife Jamie and Leah Mackel, six great grandchildren, Nicole, Sophia, Daria, Michael, Sadie and Ryan and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, George, Edward and Stephen Mackel. A Funeral Service will be held at 11AM on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Danvers. Vst. Hrs are Thurs. 4-7PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Harry’s name to the Maple Street Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 90 Maple St., Danvers.
