James V. Carroll, 80, of Brooksby Village, Peabody, formerly of Topsfield, died Sunday, June 16, 2024. He was the loving husband of Donna L. Blackwell, with whom he shared forty-seven years of marriage. Born in Winchester on April 20, 1944, Jim was raised in Reading and was a graduate of Malden Catholic High School. He went on to MIT where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and later received his Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering from Stanford University. Jim began his career at Draper Labs in Cambridge and would later work for Scientific Systems, Inc. before spending the final twenty years of his working career with the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center. He was also an adjunct professor at Salem State University and Merrimack College. Jim and Donna started their family in Wilmington, where Jim served on the Wilmington Finance Committee. His community involvement continued during his time in Topsfield, serving on both the Topsfield Finance Committee and Topsfield Conservation Commission. A dedicated father, Jim volunteered his time coaching little league and ice hockey. An Eagle Scout, he spent years as a scout leader and was proud to see his three sons also become Eagle Scouts. In his downtime, he enjoyed playing ice hockey several nights per week, playing softball in the summer, spending time at the house he built in Maine, and classical music. Jim was also a voracious reader. In addition to his wife, he leaves three sons, Nate Carroll and his wife Kathleen Shattuck of Milton, Matthew Carroll and his wife Caloway of Portland, Oregon, and Christopher Carroll and his wife Sarah of Methuen. He was the devoted grandfather to five granddaughters, Tess, Glenna, Daisy, Maeve, and Lilah. He also leaves two siblings, Roberta Carroll of Peabody and William Carroll of Newbury and several nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Marion (Smith) Carroll, and two siblings, Thomas and Richard Carroll. Jim’s funeral service will be Friday, June 21, 2024 at 10AM in C.R. Lyons & Sons Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be private. Visiting hours are Thursday from 4-7PM in the funeral home.
