Janice A. Martel

Janice Adeline Martel, 82, passed away in Boston at Beth Israel Hospital on March 2, 2023 with her family at her side.
Janice was born in Ipswich, MA on August 3, 1940. She was the daughter of Joseph Peter Martel and Josephine (Gillis) Martel. Janice was raised in Ipswich, MA. She was the youngest of six. She was the proud mother of Jay Martel of Danvers, MA.
Janice attended Ste. Chretienne Academy of Salem, MA where she made lifelong friendships. She continued her education at Boston Conservatory of Music & Berklee College of Music where she completed her Bachelors of Music degree in 1962. She was a lifelong musician, artist, and educator. She worked for the Peabody School system serving more than 3 decades as Supervisor of Music Programs before her retirement.
Janice enjoyed anything and everything music and travel along with visiting her family. In retirement Janice continued her music career serving as a concert pianist, choral director and church organist for People’s United Methodist Church of Newburyport. She was a proud member of the Merrimack Valley American Guild of Organists (MVAGO).
On August 2, 2015 she completed one of her greatest achievements hosting and performing a charity concert at the Methuen Music Hall to commemorate her 75th birthday!
Janice was a proud resident of Plum Island for almost 5 decades where she enjoyed all the sights, sounds, smells and friendships that were a part of what she described as her little piece of paradise. Janice only left Plum Island for a short time to explore the western life in Apache Junction, Arizona.
She is survived by her son Jay, her four grandchildren who she adored; Jackson, Lily, Aidan & Colton and daughter-in-law Leah (Pierce) Martel of Danvers. Janice is also survived by several nieces and nephews on the North Shore.
Janice was pre-deceased by her parents Joseph & Josephine; her sisters Doris Hinckley, Evelyn Tremblay, Alma Bruni & her brothers Howard & Paul Martel.
In lieu of services, Janice’s family will honor her memory in a private ceremony this summer where she spent her happiest years, on Plum Island.
