Janice Ostrom
April 21, 1941 ~ March 1, 2024
DANVERS- Janice (Montgomery) Ostrom, 82, passed away in Beverly hospital following a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late David M. Ostrom II, married for almost 50 years.
Born on April 21, 1941 in Troy, NY, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Helen (Schlindwein) Montgomery. Janice loved to talk about how she shared a birthday with Queen Elizabeth. She was raised and educated in Troy and graduated from Troy High School. She received her bachelor’s degree from State University New York at Oneonta and was a member of Lambda Nu Omega Sorority. She had a career as an elementary school teacher, first in Averill Park and then at Shenendehowa in Clifton Park, NY. When she had her children, she taught nursery school at the Shenendehowa United Methodist Church and then worked as an office manager for Growth Resources, a publishing company. She lived in Clifton Park, NY and Peabody, MA for most of her life; for the last 14 years, she resided at Brooksby Village, first in an independent apartment with David and then continuing care. Janice had been an active member of the Shenendehowa United Methodist Church in NY, as well as the Holy Trinity Methodist Church in Danvers, MA.
Janice was a consummate homemaker, crafting clothing for herself and her family. She had been an avid gardener with David and canned almost every vegetable known to mankind. Her father taught her about the stock market, and she even stepped in as the “family financial advisor.” She read the Boston Globe and Salem News daily and loved Sudoku and jigsaw puzzles, as well as Rummikub and Rummy. She watched Days of Our Lives, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune religiously for decades.
Janice was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1979, a time when there weren’t any medications to stop the progression of the disease. Her daughters and family would like to thank the staff in continuing care at Brooksby Village. They worked hard to learn Janice’s daily routine, which was very important to her, and took excellent care of her.
She is survived by two daughters, Sarah Ostrom of West Warwick, RI, and Kristin Allen and her husband, Andrew of Danvers, MA; two step-children, Philip Collins of CT and Holly Troiano and her husband, Anthony of Housatonic, MA; her sister, Jean Sullivan and her husband John of IN; eight grandchildren, Joshua and Rachel Allen, Olivia Ostrom Ellis, Cameron and McKensie Collins, Heather DelSoldato, Angela Troiano-Bynack and Kevin Troiano and three great grandchildren, Benjamin, Sawyer and Quinn.
Her Funeral Service will be celebrated at 10AM on Saturday, March 9, 2024, in the Holy Trinity Methodist Church, Sylvan St., Danvers. Burial is private. Visitation will be held from 4-7PM on Friday, March 8, 2024, at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Janice Ostrom Memorial Fund at the National MS Society (www.nationalmssociety.org) or to the Brooksby Village Scholarship Fund, Philanthropy Office, 300 Brooksby Village Dr., Peabody, MA 01960.
