John F. “Big John” Kavanaugh, 92, of Danvers, passed away on Friday morning, July 21, 2023 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House. He was the husband of Virginia A. (Brooks) Kavanaugh. Born in Lynn on May 21, 1931, John was the son of the late Ellen (Rooney) Kavanaugh and James Kavanaugh. Raised and educated in Lynn, he was a member of the Knight of Columbus and Holy Name Society. He was employed by the Town of Danvers for thirty years. He enjoyed bowling, traveling, and all sports—especially football. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: John F. Kavanaugh and his wife, Carla, of Salem and Kenneth Kavanaugh and his wife, Melissa, of Danvers. He was the proud grandfather of Andrew and Colin Kavanaugh. He also leaves a loving niece, Nancy Cavanaugh. John was predeceased by two sisters: Patricia Caulder and Eileen Brooks; three brothers: Patrick Cavanaugh, James Kavanaugh, and Daniel Kavanaugh; and a nephew: Daniel Cavanaugh. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at 10AM in Saint Richard’s Church, 90 Forest St., Danvers. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 4-7PM in C.R. Lyons & Sons Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, 1140 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL 60607.
