Born in: Lynn, Massachusetts
Resided in: Danvers, Massachusetts

Joseph J. “Joe” Pyburn, 74, died at home surrounded by his family on January 13th, 2025 following a tough battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Roberta A. (Beaulieu) Pyburn, with whom he shared fifty three years of marriage.

Born in Lynn on April 19, 1950, Joe was the son of the late Joseph and Phyllis (Gambale) Pyburn and brother of the late Michael Pyburn. He was raised and educated in Beverly and Danvers and was a graduate of Danvers High School, Class of 1968 and Northeastern University. For the last 30 years Joe was employed at GTG Precision Machining in Middleton and had previously worked for many years as a draftsman at General Electric and on occasion as a karate instructor and bartender.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed bicycling, karate, skiing, hiking, fishing, canoeing and he had a deep love for the ocean, spending the past several years kayaking and surfing there a few times a week.

Joe was a fantastic father to his three children – Joanne, Joseph and Sean, and his wife Mary, and a loving and generous “Papa” to his three grandchildren, Leanne, Travis and Hunter.

We will miss his sense of humor and sarcasm, his generosity, his strength and loyalty, his tall tales, and the love he shared with us all.

While his adventures in this world have ended too soon, we know his spirit will be surfing through the cosmos and continuing to adventure in peace.

Instead of flowers or a formal service, Joe would have wanted you to remember him the next time you are outdoors – whether hiking, skiing or enjoying any activity – and to fully embrace the joy and happiness in those moments.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

    • Leanne, I am saddened by the loss of your papa. May your pain be tempered by his relief. My good thoughts are with you and those you hold most dear.

  1. I will forever miss you papa! I love you and your family thank you for giving me the best memories that I got to have with you over the years, you will be forever remembered as a legend to me.

  2. I hope you’re surfing the biggest wave possible up in heaven . I know we didn’t talk much but I just wanted to say you were the coolest and you always showed nothing but love to Hachi and me . You have one of the strongest family’s I’ve ever seen you will always live on through them .

  3. I will remember a lot of great days skiing and laughing with Joe. Whether it be Reggae Weekend at Sugarloaf or just a day trip to escape from work. He had a great ability to find humor in the everyday things.
So next time your car tells you your door is a jar, think of Joe and remember, it’s not, it’s a door.

  4. I Although I have not seen Joe since his wedding I am greatly saddened to hear of his passing. We graduated together and he married my best friend Roberta. I will always remember him with fondness and may he Rest In Peace

  5. My Grandfather or Papa as I called him was the most amazing grandfather I could have asked for. Since I can remember papa has always been there for me making sure I was taken care of. At the age of 7 Papa taught me how to skate on Ice and I may have been horrible at the time but over the years he ensured that my progress was steady. I truly believe he thought I was gonna be the best skater in the world. At the age of 12 he got me my first surf board that they call the Foamy. Every once in a while during the summer season me and him would go out to Good Harbor beach to catch as many Waves as possible. I Still remember the first time I Went kayaking, and it was with him. We cruised down the Ipswich river with me right behind him. I cannot leave out all the time me, My brother Hunter and Papa all went skiing at Endicott park and once at Jackson Cross Country Skiing. Papa at an age I cant remember placed me in the Danvers National Little League where I grew to be an amazing baseball with some help from papa. Me and him would sit in the yard for hours playing catch or at the field throwing it and hitting it. He always made sure I was making progress in Baseball ensuring that I was always ahead of all the other kids on the field even with my height in the way. Papa as of almost 2 Years ago made the biggest change in my life gifting me my first truck, A 2019 Toyota Tacoma which I still drive. This gift was amazing to me with this truck helping me in my trade work. Papa all around was an incredible man and always put others first. Before Papas Passing he stated that he put most of his life towards his family and for that I thank him everyday. Papa was a very hard working man and always a man of his word. Id like to finish this very long letter by thanking all of you who had a part in his life and hoping he was as good a man to you all as he was to me. Papa I hope you are surfing on your ice cubes like you always dreamed of. I wish I could give you one last LEGENDARY Fist bump as a goodbye. Thank you Papa for all that you did for me changing me into the man I am today and always making sure I was on the right Path. Papa I love you <3

  6. Papa, thank you for allowing me into your family and treating me like one of your own all these years. I’ll miss walking into the house and seeing you with that big smile on your face, as well as all the stories you told me about your surfing adventures on a daily basis. What we shared together on your last couple days, the last hug, fist bump, and “Love you”, I will cherish forever.

  7. My heart goes out to Roberta and family. As a cousin to Joe, I remember him as a quiet guy, yet maintaining the Pyburn dry sense of humor. Family cookouts, our Dads together are a precious memory. I loved my Aunt Phyllis, who cut my hair. Fond memories of my Uncle Joe and cousin, Michael. I picked up on a common love of the outdoors among all of us cousins!

Thankfully we can carry these fond memories in our hearts from our Irish Grampy Pyburn to going forward….❤️
