Katherine Kontos
September 15, 1928 ~ October 22, 2023
Katherine (Mackel) Kontos, 95, of Danvers, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, October 22, 2023.
Born in Danvers on September 15, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Olympia (Stellas) Mackel. A lifelong Danvers resident, she was a 1947 graduate of Holten High School. Professionally, Kay was employed as manager of operator services for AT&T, retiring after thirty years of service in 1989.She was a member of Saint Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody and the Telephone Pioneers of America.
She was the wife of the late Peter Kontos, who predeceased her in 1999. She leaves two children, Theodore Kontos and his wife Susan, and Beth Kontos and her partner John Neilson, all of Danvers, four grandchildren, Stephen Kontos and his wife Margaux, Christopher Kontos, Katherine Hayden, and Rebecca Moskal and her husband Adam, a great-granddaughter, Olivia Kontos, a sister, Sultana Vergis, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Stephen, Edward, George, Harry, and William Mackel. Kay also leaves behind her beloved dog, Brady, who brought her so much joy and comforted her until the very end.
A true matriarch, Kay was strong, generous, loving, and funny. She enjoyed spending time walking her dog around the neighborhood while fostering many close friendships over the years. Kay exuded generosity, always welcoming others into her home, making sure no one left hungry, and slipping cash to the grandkids through a not so subtle handshake. She loved sports, once being an avid golfer herself, she supported her children and grandchildren through all their sporting ventures, and was arguably one of Boston sports biggest fans. Kay enjoyed her time with family and the memories made over the years will be cherished by all. She will be deeply missed.

The Moore family thoroughly enjoyed being Miss Kay’s neighbors! I loved talking with her and she always let me know when she made her famous Baklava! I can still remember how decadent it was! Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kontos family.
Kay will be very missed in the neighborhood. So many good times on the Kay’s deck throughout the years with Cassie, Neely, Ziggy, Brady, Cuddles & Sparty. We knew summer started when ice cube water was on the deck. We shared stories from the past and talked endlessly about our dogs, but mostly Kay LOVED to share news about her children and grandchildren. Kay was good to everyone who crossed her path…sharing words of kindness or comfort. An amazing life for a wonderful person.
Love Jane & Caroline
Sorry for the loss of your mother. Mrs Kontos, was My Boss at AT&T as a information operator & then later as a switchboard operator. My aunt got me that job but I remember Your mother was so patient with me & as busy as she was Always stopped to guide me. A very rare type of Boss who actually cared!
Dear Beth, Ted and families, Our Deepest Sympathy on the passing of your beloved Mother. May she rest in peace.
