Kathryn M. Callahan

Kathryn M. (Sweeney) Callahan, 96, died Monday, January 5, 2015 at the Brentwood Rehabilitation Center in Danvers. She was the loving wife of the late Thomas J. Callahan, with whom she shared sixty-eight years of marriage. Born in Peabody on July 20, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Anna (Keown) Sweeney. She was raised and educated in Peabody, attending Saint John’s School and graduating from Peabody High School. Kathryn went on to Salem State College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree and later two master’s degrees. A longtime teacher in the Peabody school system, Kathryn was employed first as a high school business teacher and then as an elementary school teacher, both as a classroom teacher and then traveling to each elementary school to teach French. She finished her career as a guidance counselor at Kennedy Memorial Junior High School. A Danvers resident for nearly forty-five years, she was a parishioner of Saint Thomas the Apostle Church and a regular communicant of the Discalced Carmelite Monastery. She was most happy spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Sister Teresa of Jesus, O.C.D. (Patricia A. Callahan) of Danvers Carmel, Thomas J. Callahan, Jr. and his wife Yupadee of Bangkok, Thailand, Elaine M. Schneider of West Chester, PA, and John F. Callahan of Escondido, CA, seven grandchildren, Maura Adams, Jamie Hankins, Meghan Myrbeck, Samantha Sekse, Kay Callahan, Thomas Callahan III, and Jonathan Callahan, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Kate Marie Kisselev, and her brother Frank P. Sweeney. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 11AM in the Chapel of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns, 15 Mt. Carmel Rd., Danvers. Burial will follow in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Saturday in the Chapel from 9-10:45AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Kathryn’s name may be made to the Discalced Carmelite Nuns, 15 Mt. Carmel Rd., Danvers, MA 01923.
