kenneth hollingsworth
Kenneth W. Hollingsworth, 94, was born in Brooklyn, Nova Scotia, the second son of William and Marguerite Hollingsworth. Husband of the late Jennie F (Leskevicz) Hollingsworth. He came to the United States at age 5 and eventually became a naturalized citizen. Ken lived in Nahant for 45 years and in Wenham for 40 years. The last 5 years of his life were spent in Ithaca, NY where he peacefully passed. After graduating from Lynn Classical High (class of 38), he worked on and around his beloved water. After joining the Merchant Marines he, after much hard work, attained his Captains license and worked for Ross Towboats for several years. Unhappy that this work required long absences from home, lobster fishing became his new livelihood. Hurricane Carol ended this venture when his boat was destroyed. His father and uncle worked in the building trades where they built and refurbished houses and Ken was encouraged to join them. Bricklaying was a talent Ken had and enjoyed. He eventually joined Bricklayer’s Union Local 3 in Boston and worked many years in the New England area. The Faneuil Hall Restoration, various hospitals, colleges, and many other commercial buildings were part of his labor. After retiring, he became an accomplished gardener earning many prizes and ribbons for his vegetables and fruit at the Topsfield Fair. He was an avid Boston sports fan and loved “his Bruins”. His children survive him: daughter Kathleen and Richard Overton of Lansing, NY and son Kenneth “Ed” and Jean Hollingsworth of Wenham, MA. Grandchildren are: Dan and Lori Hollingsworth of NJ, Elizabeth and William Sherr of CO, Emily Hollingsworth Johnson and Soren Johnson of Lynnfield, George Sweeney and Michele Damba of Newton, and Jen Hollingsworth of NH. Ken is also survived by his 3 sisters: Doris Hefler of Nahant, Frances Tucker of Indiana, and Kathleen Reynolds of Swampscott and predeceased by 3 siblings: Cecil Hollingsworth, Thelma Ross, and Margaret Taylor. Through marriage, Bob Case of Florida and Sofie Harris of Salem also survive him. Great grandchildren are Alexander Natale, Jack Hollingsworth, Keeghan Sherr, and Gavin Sherr. His Funeral Service will be celebrated at 10:30AM on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Wenham Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Kenneth’s name to the American Lung Assoc., 460 Totten Pond Rd. #400 Waltham, MA, 02451.
