Margaret J. Melanson

Margaret J. (Amos) Melanson, 88, of Danvers, died peacefully Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the Herrick House in Beverly. She was the loving wife of the late Walter J. Melanson.

Born in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada, on September 24, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Murray and Phyllis (Bowser) Amos. Raised and educated in Sackville, Margaret and her husband, Walter, immigrated to the United States in 1964 and settled in Danvers, where she would make her home for more than sixty years.

Margaret worked for Stop & Shop for twenty years, but she was best known as the longtime owner and operator of Margaret’s Place, a consignment shop which she ran for forty years. First located in Danversport and, in more recent years, on Elm Street in Danvers Square, Margaret’s Place became a beloved community fixture. Margaret truly loved her customers and took great joy in helping people. Over the decades, countless friendships were formed across the counter, and her shop became a familiar and welcoming place to generations of customers.

Outside of work, Margaret enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. She loved country music and dancing, a glass of wine, a good book, and taking a walk on a beautiful day. Above all else, however, family was most important to Margaret. She was devoted to her daughters and took tremendous pride and joy in her grandchildren.

She leaves two daughters, Cheryl MacLean and her husband, Daniel, of Peabody, and Tracy Thomas and her husband, Lornie, of Beverly; four grandchildren, Danny MacLean of Danvers, Jodi MacLean of Maine, Emma Thomas of Salem, and Jake Thomas of Miami, Florida; a sister, Ruthie Hicks of New Brunswick, Canada; a brother, Leslie Amos of New Brunswick, Canada; and many extended family members and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Susan Melanson, and her brothers, Denny, Reggie, Randall and David..
