Born in: Medford, Massachusetts
Resided in: Tewksbury, Massachusetts

Mary Louise (Shannon) O’Brien, of Tewksbury, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2025, surrounded by family and friends. She was 96 years young! Mary was preceded in death by her husband and love of her life, Fred.

A native of Medford Massachusetts, she was born on February 17, 1929, to the late William J. and Mary L. (Flynn) Shannon.

Mary met the love of her life Fredrick O’Brien at a Christmas Dance! Within a year, the love birds were married in the fall of 54’. Every Saturday was date night. Dinner and dancing were always on the agenda (along with saying the Holy Rosary during the drive).

Fred passed away unexpectedly at the age of 37, leaving her alone with seven young children. Mary stayed true to their motto “the family that prays together – stays together”. Mary created a home that was warm, welcoming and open to all. She dedicated her life to raising her children. The inheritance she passed on was not silver and gold. Faith is our legacy!

In 1975 she started attending college! She began working for the phone company (again). Among her accomplishments: Mary and her daughter Terri were the first mother-daughter Computer Programmers at team New England Telephone Co. She retired at 62, to care for her mother. She was up on current affairs, involved in helping others, supporting prayer lines, pilgrimages abroad, dancing, driving in convertibles, and bargain hunting!

She LOVED her children, Rose Platt, Betty Doherty and her husband Bill, Terri Hanley and her husband Tim, Cathy Allan, Paul O’Brien and his wife Jane, Frederick O’Brien and his wife Martha, and Bill O’Brien. She was the adored grandmother of Shannon and her husband Eric, Michael and his wife Ellen, David and his wife Chrissy, Joseph, Kevin and his fiancée Kelsey, Danielle and her husband Matt, Anna, Tim, Sean, Nicole, Brianna, Jack, Danny, and Freddy Joe. She was the great grandmother of Katherine, Benjamin, Hailey, Emily, Joshua, Olivia, and Aiden. She was predeceased in death by her sister and her husband Harry and Kathleen Timmons, brother, Robert Shannon, and sister Mildred Stickney. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Ernie and Eleanor Walker and sister-in-law Carolyn Shannon.

Her powerful faith and zest for life was passed down to her family and will continue ever onwards.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 25th at 11:30AM in Saint Mary of the Annunciation Church, 24 Conant St. Danvers. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I met Mary when she first moved to Tewksbury and would attend the Boston Pro Life Marches with the St Williams pro life group. She was my best buddy. We said the Rosary often and always prayed to end abortion. She would tell me about praying at the abortion clinics when they were arresting the prayer angels. She attended pro Life Marches in DC for years. Weeks before her death she asked me what we could do to stop abortion “should I write letters?” I told her that God just wanted her to pray. Mary loved to pray. The Pro Life movement have lost one of the most dedicated and faithful warriors.

  2. Dear Bill and O’Brien family, I am so very sorry for your loss. I never had the chance to meet your mother but I did pray for her. She sounded like a beautiful soul and also a terrific prayer warrior. May Eternal light shine upon her and may her soul rest in peace. May God send you comfort as you mourn her loss.
In Jesus name, Sincerely, Kelly Campbell

  3. I met Mrs. O’Brian many years ago when I came to Boston for a wedding of her daughter’s friend. Judy. Our luggage was delayed and she was doing her best to find clothes for me and my husband in case the suitcases didn’t arrive in time. Fortunately, they did. But I never forgot how this precious lady was doing her best for two people she barely knew. That was just the first of the many prayers she prayed for me over the years. I will never forget her. God bless her family at this time of sorrow. Love Kathy

  4. My Aunt Mary’s Light will continue to Shine brightly, in part, through the collective Light of her children, my amazing cousins who were raised by this amazing mother and this true and faithful child of God. May Aunt Mary along with her beloved husband, my Uncle Fred, find eternal peace in Our Lord’s Warm and Loving Embrace. Amen. I Love you Aunt Mary.

  5. I also live in Eagles Landing and knew Mary. She was always sitting on her porch in nice weather enjoying saying hello and talking with people who walked by. I don’t think I ever saw her without a beautiful smile. I’m so sorry for your loss. Prayers and condolences to your family.

  6. Our prayers are with you all. May her beautiful life always lived…. in God’s grace, give your hearts peace now and always. What an amazing woman, mother, grandmother, and so much more! She will be dancing in heaven in your father’s arms once again & forever more.

  7. Rose, Betty, Terri, Cathy, Paul, Bill and Fred, and your families,
May the Gracious Lord grant you peace and consolation at this sad time. But, a joyous time, too. What an incredible woman who lived a long life with enduring faith and sacrifice; constant grace and beauty; a grateful heart and abounding humor (with the help of her children, the lights of her life!). Oh, What a lovely, lovely woman. Her smile could light a room. Sweet memories of the two Mary O’Briens together when our families visited. May she rest in peace and surely her good works won’t stop now as your father’s never did, either. Heaven rejoices and reunions abound.
Love to all of you and our prayers for peace and consolation in your loss. God Bless you all!

  8. My deepest sympathy to the family.
I feel so privileged to have been asked to assist Mary during this last year of her life . Mary was truly a woman of grace , who lived life in gratitude to God daily. Her crown was the love ,respect and attention from her family, which they all showered upon her .
Mary OBrien was truly a gift in my life and will remain in my heart and prayers❤️🙏✝️

  9. Mary was truly a beautiful soul, whose kindness, joy, and love touched everyone around her. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew her, and I feel so blessed to have witnessed her warmth in all the prayers she did for us. I believe with all my heart that God has welcomed her into heaven, where she is at peace. My deepest condolences to Bill and the family during this difficult time. May you find comfort in the beautiful memories she leaves behind and the prayers that surround you.

  10. My most sincerest condolences to Bill and the whole family. May Mary be embraced in the ever loving arms of Jesus and Blessed Mother Mary.
