Matthew S. Woodbury
June 9, 1989 ~ August 25, 2023
BEVERLY- Matthew S. Woodbury, 34, unexpectedly passed away on Friday, August 25, 2023.
Born in Portsmouth, NH, to the late Scott and Linda Woodbury, their gift from God. Matthew attended Beverly public schools and was a graduate of Beverly High School, Class of 2007 where the call of “Woody” down the halls was as common as the bell. Matthew was kind and generous, in which you could see in many of his hobbies. Matthew loved holidays where he would cook the perfect turkey and cherish family time. His quick wit and timing of a joke rivaled that of comedic greats.
Matthew loved spending time with his “Mush” Ella, cooking, painting, camping, fishing, gardening and anything New England sports related. Watching the teams play, especially in the season final game, was something he lived for. Matthew was enthusiastic about everyone and everything he loved. He took pride in being from a military family and was very patriotic.
During Matthew’s career he worked at locally owned shops. He enjoyed caring for others, cooking, and helping people move.
Matthew is survived by his precious daughter, Ella Mae Woodbury and his partner Megan Wildman of Saugus, his sister Sharlyne Woodbury of Beverly, brother Scott L.J and his wife Lyndsey Woodbury of AR, his sister Kathlyne Woodbury of Beverly, two nephews, Leo and Aiden of AR, his grandmother E. Sandra Woodbury of Beverly and several beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins. In addition to his parents, Matthew is predeceased by his maternal grandparents John E. and Arlyne Cassidy, and paternal grandfather John E. Woodbury.
Visitation will be held from 4-7PM on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers. His service will be held at 10AM on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Saint Mary Cemetery, Beverly. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a funny memory for Ella to have for when she is older. Online condolences, memories and directions are available at www.LyonsFuneral.com
Woody was always a shoulder to cry on whenever I was having a bad day at work. I’ll never forget all the times he was there for me to either commiserate or to cheer me up. I’ll never forget the sound of his laugh, which always made me laugh ten times harder. He will be greatly missed. Sending my love to all who made him the person that he was, and to all of the people that he helped shape along the way. ❤️
I am so sorry to hear about Matt. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time. I hope your memories will bring you great comfort in the days to come. Please accept my deepest sympathies, Nancy Opidee (Megan’s great aunt)
Woody was one of the funniest people I knew . His laugh was so contagious that one day we left for a LEGIT 15 minutes straight . Megan wanted to kill us. I’ll never forget Sam breaking that dishwasher and woody and I screaming “sam shut it off Sam!” Ugh gunna miss seeing you around , thanks for everything . Rest in the greatest piece . ❤️❤️❤️
Although we have only known Matt for a few years, we know he was a very polite and respectful, loving man. We are heartbroken at his passing. May he be at peace. Condolences to his family and friends.
Matt, my buddy, my best friend we met back in 6th grade and hung out nearly everyday from that point all through highschool. We played basketball, had many sleepovers and I was invited to many Sunday dinners alongside your family and am so blessed to be a part of the family. I remember going into Boston when the Celtics were in the NBA Finals we spent the day in Boston, just a couple 18 years olds for the love of the game and Boston sports, such a great memory that for years had popped into my mind anytime I thought about the Boston Celtics and/or you. I wouldn’t have time or space to continue sharing our memories so I will continue to share them with loved ones and friends as time goes on. Lastly, My condolences go out to the entire Woodbury family for this precious life lost and to Megan and Ella. Matt is up in heaven at peace at last with his Mommy, Dad and Gram RIP Matt aka Woody. Love you
The Dragonfly Story
“In the bottom of an old pond lived some grubs who could not understand why none of their group ever came back after crawling up the stems of the lilies to the top of the water. They promised each other that the next one who was called to make the upward climb would return and tell what happened to him. Soon one of them felt an urgent impulse to seek the surface; he rested himself on the top of a lily pad and went through a glorious transformation, which made him a dragonfly with beautiful wings. In vain he tried to keep his promise. Flying back and forth over the pond, he peered down at his friends below. Then he realized that even if they could see him they would not recognize such a radiant creature as one of their number.
The fact that we cannot see our friends or communicate with them after the transformation, which we call death, is no proof that they cease to exist.”
