Mildred Moulton

Mildred Sim (Jewett) Moulton, 83, passed away Aug. 17, 2010 in Beverly Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Salem on March 7, 1927 she was the daughter of the late Mildred Evelyn (Sim) Jewett and the late Edward Everett and Bernice Ring Atwood Jewett. She was raised and educated in Dorchester and graduated from Jeremiah E. Burke High School for Girls in 1944. She went on to graduate from Simmons College in 1948 with a degree in biochemistry and graduated from Northeastern Univ. Physician Asst. Program as a licensed Physician Asst. in 1975. Mildred contributed significantly to the early developments in the field of neurosurgical research on brain tumors, and with her close friend and mentor Dr. Bertram Selverstone, she published some of the first research papers done in this field while working at Mass. General Hosp. She later worked with Dr. Selverstone at Tufts New England Medical Ctr and the Miriam Hosp. in Providence, RI in the same field. She was a member of one of the earliest graduating classes from Northeastern in the newly established program for training Physician Assistants, following which she worked first at Wheaton College in Norton, then with a dedicated passion at the Veteran’s Admin Hospital in Jamaica Plain, working in the drug abuse unit. She retired in 1995, and relocated first to Cotuit, MA, and later to Danvers, devoting the remaining years of her life to helping to raise two granddaughters, of whom she was very proud. Mildred was a dedicated scientist, intellectual, artist, mother and grandmother. She was a unique individual in pursing her dreams at a time when women rarely had the opportunity. She has instilled that strength and independence in her daughter and granddaughters, who will keep her spirit alive. She was the beloved mother of Linda Ann Moulton, and adored grandmother of Lisa May Moulton Goddard and Sarah Jewett Goddard, all of Danvers and Cotuit. She also leaves her devoted dog Molly. She was the former wife of Richard Brooks Moulton. A Funeral Service will be held on Sat., Aug. 21, 2010 at 11AM in C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers, MA, 01923. Vst. hrs will be held prior to the service from 9AM-10:45AM. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Danvers.
