Nancy Brooks Marculewicz
August 10, 2022
DANVERS– Nancy Brooks Marculewicz formerly of Essex, Massachusetts died peacefully at home on August 10, 2022, at the age of 84.
Realizing a childhood dream, Nancy had a successful career as an artist and arts educator. Perhaps most famous for her serene, acrylic landscapes and intricate collages of coastal Cape Ann, her work spanned a wide variety of media. The salt marsh was one of her greatest inspirations. She would often say that the salt marsh appeared different every time she looked at it. She had a masterful ability to transpose the seasonal colors of the many landscapes she observed onto canvas. Later in her career she pursued print making in the form of monoprints using a special technique involving gelatin plates. She became the preeminent authority on this technique, and in 2002 published the book on the subject titled Making Monotypes Using a Gelatin Plate. She won numerous awards for her works and exhibited all over the world. Her pieces appear in many public and private collections. She was an active member of North Shore Arts Association in Gloucester, the Cambridge Arts Association, The Newburyport Art Association, The Nature Painting Society, the Society of Layerists in Multi-Media and the Monotype Guild of New England. She was also a founder of the Essex County Greenbelt’s Art in The Barn.
She taught at several public and private institutions, including Governors Academy and Endicott College. She believed in the accessibility and the power of art, and often remarked that if you could see, you could draw.
She was born in Mineola, New York, and grew up in Mystic, Connecticut. After attending Bradford Junior College in Haverhill, Massachusetts she earned a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. It was at RISD, where she met her husband of 64 years. After spending time in Rhode Island, New York and Birmingham, England, she and her husband settled in Essex, Massachusetts where they lived for nearly 50 years. During her time in Essex, when not painting, she was an active member of the community, a voracious reader, and a dedicated member of the Essex County Greenbelt. In 2014, she and her husband relocated to Brooksby Village in Danvers, Massachusetts where she continued to teach art and served on the welcoming committee.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Robert Marculewicz, her son Stefan of Severna Park, Maryland, her daughter Alexandra Adshead of Stavanger, Norway; and four grandchildren, Charles and Benjamin Marculewicz, and Isla and Rowan Adshead.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan St., Danvers, MA, 01923 or the Essex County Greenbelt, 82 Eastern Ave, Essex, MA, 01929. Online condolences are available at www.LyonsFuneral.com
