Odis L. Jones died peacefully on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Putnam Farms at Danvers. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy P. (Henderson) Jones. They met in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and shared 64 years of marriage. Born in Hico, Louisiana on November 2, 1924, he was the son of the late William and Bonnie Jones. Odis worked on a farm with his ten brothers and sisters until he enlisted in the Navy. . The next 22 years, during WWII, and the Korean War, Odis served on eight classes of submarines, the Fulton, Gato, Balao Aggressive, Fletcher, Tench, Skipjack and Lafayette. Quite often he would go to sea and was not able to share news of his assignment. Later, he would share stories of being the first to travel under the polar ice cap and his travels to Australia and New Zealand. While Odis enjoyed the chance to see the world, he always welcomed returning to “home port,” Portsmouth, New Hampshire. After retiring from the Navy, Odis and Dorothy settled in Chittenango, New York and he worked at Manlius Military Academy until it closed. For the next 15 years he ran for the food service for the Chittenango School District. He was a member of the Masons, an active member of the Lions Club, Rotary and the Chittenango Boosters Club. Odis was a kind and gentle man who was always willing to offer help and support for those in need. Odis is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Raymond Muse of Salem, Deborah and Ralph Collis of Fayetteville, New York, and Theresa Bowdoin of Cartersville Georgia. He was the loving grandfather of Robert and his wife Colleen Muse of Milton, and William and his wife Rachel of Bradford, and the great-grandfather of Molly, Liam, Pearl and Stella Muse. He leaves a brother, Milton Jones and sister, Linda Sue Ulmer of Minden Louisiana. The family wishes to thank the staff of Putnam Farm at Danvers and Care Dimensions for the outstanding care and support given to Odis and his family.
