Patricia “Pat” MacAfee Urner, a beloved mother and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on October 19th, 2023 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Born on August 2, 1927, in Boston, she was the proud daughter of the late Dwight and Guiliaelma (Ash) MacAfee. Pat spent her formative years in Belmont, where she would later raise her family. She received her early education at Belmont Day School, went on to graduate from Belmont High School, and furthered her studies at the former West Hill Junior College in Boston. She also lived in Brookline, where she worked part-time in the local library, and most recently she enjoyed her residence directly across from Revere Beach. An avid traveler, Pat was known for her adventurous spirit. She journeyed solo to the far reaches of the world, exploring destinations like China, Russia, and Thailand. However, Africa always held a special place in her heart as her favorite trip. Closer to home, her family’s summer house in Gilmanton, New Hampshire, provided a cherished retreat, imbued with memories from both her youth and early adult years. With a deep appreciation for the world around her, Pat was passionate about nature, animals, and flowers. Her green thumb and love for indoor gardening brightened many days. She also found great joy in reading: a lifetime pleasure that allowed her to continue her travels to a myriad of places and times while at home. She is survived by her loving daughter, Katharine Urner-Jones, and son-in-law, Lawrence Jones, of Georgetown, her niece, Jody Ward of Brambleton, VA, and nephews James Smith of Ijamsville, MD and Robert Smith. Patricia's memory also lives on in the hearts of her extended family, including “unbiological daughters” Laura McGrath of Lunenburg and Rebecca Arena of Atkinson, NH, and many dear friends who were fortunate to have known her. Two children, Susan and Dwight Urner, and her brother, Dwight MacAfee, predeceased her. Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, October 30, 2023 at 11 AM for a service in honor and celebration of Pat's life at C.R. Lyons & Sons Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jack Satter House Tenant’s Association, Inc., c/o Jack Satter House, 420 Revere Beach Blvd., Revere, MA 02151 or to Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty St., Danvers, MA 01923

  1. I chatted quite a bit with Pat in the Fitness Center while she was exercising. She emphasized how important it was to read a variety of books, not just the ones I liked. She loved that I was growing as a reader by being in a monthly book club. I will miss her strength, support, and spirit.
