September 23, 2012
Paul L. “Sonny” Southwick, formerly of Wenham and Danvers, passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at Ocoee Healthcare in Florida after a period of declining health. He was 90 years old. He was the husband of the late Kathleen (Skinner) Southwick who passed away in 2005 and twin brother of the late Carl Southwick who passed away in 1985. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Henry and Alice (Hargraves) Southwick. He was one of 13 children, attended Lynn Public Schools, and in 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. There he served on the USS Joseph Hewes, the USS Goldsborough, and the USS Wyoming, all of which were destroyed in battle. He received a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 bronze stars and an Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with 5 bronze stars. He was a member of the Teamsters Union and retired from Cullen Fuel. He loved his morning coffee with ‘they guys’ at Mickey Ds but his greatest passion was sports, whether it be his Red Sox, Celtics. Patriots, or Bruins. He moved to Florida in 2009 to live with his nephew and niece, Dale and Karen Bennett, who were his caregivers. He leaves his sisters Barbara Manos of Spring Hill, FL and Jeannette Skinner of Danvers. He was brother to the late Raymond, George, Robert, Irma, Laura, Dorothy, Pauline, Sylvia, and Gloria. May the Peace of Christ be with the family this week, knowing Uncle Sonny is is a better place resting in the arms of the Lord. Dale and Karen, your generosity and love were obvious…and teaches the rest of us the meaning of love. God Bless You Love, Cathy Bennett
My deepest condolences to the family, especially to Karen and Dale who were awesome caregivers. It was most evident of their love and devotion to their ‘Uncle Sonny’. He was blessed to have family like you in his life. There’s no doubt in my mind he knew it. Meeting and serving your uncle @ the Center was truly a honor and privileged by far. It wasn’t long after I met Mr. Paul Southwick, I knew he was someone special. There were days, I wanted to just ‘brighten up’ his day with a smile or a kind word and he would often beat me to it by saying “There’s Win, there she is …” then give me a big smile. He will always have a special place in my heart.
Dear Southwick Family, I am so sorry to have read of your loss. Please accept my sincere condolences. Something that I have personally found to be of great comfort is what the Bible says at John 5:28,29 as well as Revelation 21:4. In these verses we see that soon God is going to bring about a resurrection of our loved ones as well as do away with all causes we have for suffering including sickness and death. Knowing this has always comforted me and it is my sicnere hope that these thoughts comfort your family as well. Rebekah.
