Richard D. Dixon

Richard D. Dixon was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on April 25, 1933. He was the son of Vera(Graves) Dixon and Douglas Dixon. He was the grandson of Effie and Joseph Graves and David and Mary Dixon.
Mr. Dixon was educated in the Lynn schools and graduated from Lynn English High School in 1950
Mr. Dixon attended Lowell Teachers College for two years and then entered the US Army. He was stationed in Friedberg Germany for two years. He returned to the United States and took courses at Boston University prior to completing his degree in music education at Lowell State Teachers College. He graduated in 1959.

Upon graduation, Mr. Dixon became the music specialist in the Millis School System. In 1962 he began his teaching career in the Lexington School System and was a music specialist there until his retirement in 1995.

Mr. Dixon married Barbara Paasche Dixon in 1957. They were divorced in 1983.

During his lifetime, Mr. Dixon had an active music career outside of the public school system. He was organist and choir director for the Acton Center Congregational Church as well as the Park Ave Congregational Church in Arlington. He sang with the Masterworks Chorale (formerly the Lexington Choral Society) for over 40 years. Mr. Dixon served at President of the Masterworks Chorale twice during his tenure with the organization.

In his retirement, Mr. Dixon was an active Volunteer with the Boston Symphony. For over 20 years he was a frequent tour guide, served on the Board of Boston Symphony of Volunteers, as well as various other committees. In 2013, Mr. Dixon was presented the Hessie Sargent Spirit of Volunteering Award by the Boston Symphony Association of Volunteers for his work at the BSO. Mr. Dixon was also a member of the BSO Higginson Society.

Mr. Dixon was an active member of Trinity Church In The City Of Boston. For many years he was an usher, a facilitator for Inquirer’s Classes and a lay liturgist.

Mr. Dixon is survived by this partner Douglas W. Rendell of Boston. They were together for 43 years.
Mr. Dixon is survived by his son Alan E. Dixon of North Port, Florida, his brothers Raymond Dixon and his wife Margaret of Methuen, David Dixon and his wife Carol of Lynn, his nephews Douglas Dixon and his wife Jennifer of Maryland , Scott Dixon and his wife Toni of Peabody and his nieces Dawn(Dixon) Coulombe and her husband Stephen of Salisbury and Dianne(Dixon) McAuliffe and her husband Michael of Newburyport, Beth(Dixon) Smith and her husband Marc of Lynnfield. He is also survived by numerous grandnephews and grandnieces.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 29, 2026 at 10 AM at Trinity Church in the City of Boston
