Sheila M. Cook

sheila cook

December 20, 1948 ~ December 3, 2024

Resided in: Peabody, Massachusetts

Sheila M. (Moriarty) Cook, 75, of Peabody, formerly of Swampscott, died at home on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 following many “good days and better days” in her battle with multiple sclerosis and ultimately cancer.  She was the beloved wife of Earl W. Cook, with whom she shared fifty-two years of marriage.

Born in Somerville on December 20, 1948, Sheila was the daughter of the late David and Nora (Lynch) Moriarty from whom she received her deep pride and appreciation for her Irish roots.  She was raised and educated in Somerville and Medford and was a graduate of Saint Clement’s High School and Boston State College.

Sheila’s love for children persisted throughout her life – from raising three children of her own, to dedicating her professional life to early childhood education, to her interactions with her grandchildren or any child who would sit long enough. This love led her to own and operate a preschool, Kid’s Korner, in Swampscott for many years and continued as an educator in the Swampscott Public Schools.

Though a resident of Swampscott for thirty-two years and Peabody for seven, her summers for over fifty years belonged to the St. Laurent Campers Association in Royalston. Her best days were spent at the beach, her nights around the fire collecting and dishing out the latest gossip (whether true or slightly fabricated) over a beer and a cigarette. She loved gardening, finding the best deal in town and a great cup of coffee.

In addition to her husband, she leaves three children, Sarah Geary and her husband Dennis of Salem, Zachary Cook and his wife Molly of Scituate, and Amanda Cook of Peabody, her cherished grandchildren, Emma Cook, Finnegan Cook, and Nathaniel Geary, her siblings, Charles Moriarty, David Moriarty, and Maura Woods, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Marjorie McLaughlin and Noreen Flaherty.

  4. Our hearts are broken with the news of Aunt Sheila’s loss! So thankful to have spent time with Sheila at a much-needed family reunion a few years back. (I can’t get over the resemblance Sheila had to my beloved grandmother!) May she be at peace and greeted with the Biggest HUG by her mother, father and sisters. I strongly believe although Sheila has left us ‘physically’, she will remain with us in ‘spirit’ until we are reunited.
We love you, Aunt Sheila!! Love, Joanne (Moriarty), Joe, Megan (Jack), Joe ll (Liz) Krysh

  5. Paul and I would like to express our deepest sympathy to everyone in the Cook family. Sheila was such a wonderful, loving person who will be greatly missed. Her suffering is over and she is at peace. Her spirit will go on in the memories you hold.

  8. Sheila,

It was a true privilege that you trusted me with your curls and allowed me to be a part of your life. I always looked forward to seeing you, and I’ll miss our deep conversations. Thank you for always knowing when I was down and having the perfect words to inspire me and make me smile. Rest in peace, my dear friend. 🩷

  9. For the last few days I’ve been remembering times with you Sheila.
My mom and dad’s 25th anniversary when you snuck a screwdriver drink to me. My parents first camping trip, we had a site next to you Ginny and friends.
Your crazy smile always looked like you were up to no good lol. Keg party’s at Nancy’s. Earl here’s a really big hug.

    Joyce (Cutting) Charon

  10. Earl, Sarah, Zach and Amanda, it is very difficult to adequately express the sadness we felt when we learned about Sheila’s passing. Your family and ours moved to Swampscott at about the same time. Sheila was probably the first person who Masha met after we moved in. It was on the steps of Hadley school, 40 years ago.
Shiela was one of the kindest and at the same time strongest people we knew. Despite all that she had to face, she was always positive in her outlook and confident in her decisions.
I don’t think we can begin to comprehend what Sheila and all of you had to go through in the last few years and especially in the last few weeks.

We are very sorry for your loss and will always remember Sheila.
